A swish hotel with lovely rooms and excellent breakfasts set on a peaceful side street, a 5-minute stroll from the centre of town

The Villa is one of those lovely boutique hotels that scores top marks across the board. You're pretty much in the middle of town, but hidden away on a quiet side street opposite a pretty park. Then, there's a batch of smart bedrooms, which have style and comfort in equal measure. Add to this lovely staff on hand to book restaurants, balloon flights or day trips to Stonehenge and you have a perfect base. You're a five-minute stroll from magnificent Pulteney Bridge; the station isn't much further, so leave your car at home. You can hire bikes in town, then follow a towpath along the river out into the country. Back home, there's tea and cake on arrival, buck's fizz for breakfast, even bats and balls for children who want to go to the park. Breakfast – served in an airy dining room – is excellent: smoked salmon and free-range scrambled eggs, buttermilk pancakes, the full cooked works. Rooms vary in size, but all have excellent beds, pretty wallpaper and sparkling bathrooms. Good restaurants wait close by. Don't miss the Roman Baths or the Fashion Museum. There's off-street parking, too, a real boon.

"Absolutely brilliant place. Introduction started with a warm welcome and finished with one of the best breakfasts (and matching service!) we've had a chance to enjoy. Location in Bath makes a definite winner. Thank you!"

"Marvelous Villa Magdala - stylish, very comfortable and friendly 5* boutique B&B. Lots of small elegant touches and owner's attention to detail that make for a very comfortable and satisfying stay. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for in Bath. We'll be back (very soon)!"

"This is an extremely stylish B&B. The level of comfort, especially the beds, is second to none. I have been in far less comfortable 5* hotels. The staff are genuinely interested in making your stay as pleasant as possible and always go the 'extra mile'. Breakfast is a treat with a Bucks Fizz to start off the day! The quality of the breakfast was superb. Can't fault it! I look forward to visiting Villa Magdala again in the future."
