The Experience

Enter into a big utility room with a welly rack and lots of pegs and hooks for coats, a lobby with original range, a table from which to play cards or gaze at the river and an old pine cupboard full of games. It’s comfortable in the sitting room with cushioned window seats and a wood-burner for cooler days. It’s actually hard to stay away from the windows with the river being mesmerising.

The decking leads to a bit of lawn then the jetty and the water, slow moving and deep at this point so you can launch yourself, your paddle board or your canoe straight off the edge. If you prefer to walk in gently then you’ll find spaces further along, including a lovely little beach, perfect for picnics.

Walk to the village, or drive in three minutes, for two pubs, shops, tennis courts and a playground. Return to simple, lovely bedrooms with feather and down duvets and pillows, calming colours and hooks for your clothes. You’ll hear owls.

Reviews

Such a brilliant stay at this lovely cottage, slap bang next to a rushing river and beautiful fields. We spent Christmas here and it was such a wonderful place to gather the whole family. Great rooms, comfy beds, lovely big kitchen and a cosy living room complete with log fire. Would highly recommend.

We've just had the most wonderful stay in the River Cottage on the Turvey Estate. Everything you may need for a short stay is provided, and it's all extremely comfortable, without being fussy. Grace was also remarkably quick to respond to any queries. The under-floor heated stone floors were perfect. My favourite moments... watching dawn break over the river from the warmth of the hot tub and listening to the many and varied bird life starting their day - including a mumuration of starlings directly above the cottage.

Sarah, London

Such a beautiful setting, in fields beside the River Ouse. A refurbished cottage with modern conveniences but retaining the traditional feel and appearance. A perfect break! And the sun shone every day.

Kathleen, London

Cottage absolutely beautiful. All mod cons, warm as toast yet still retaining some original features. Wonderful views feels like you're in the middle of nowhere yet village only 5 minutes walk with good pub food! Will definitely be booking another stay soon.

Mary, London

Absolutely beautiful stay at River Cottage. Grace, our wonderful host, has thought of everything. Location is idyllic, right on the river Ouse, and a short walk to local amenities. The cottage itself is well equipped and we didn't want for anything during our time there. Will most definitely be booking again.

Come and discover undiscovered Bedfordshire! It's like a lovely secret - gorgeous flattish countryside, a splendid river, interesting market towns, meat straight from the local farm and no crowds. Lovely.

Location

The neighbourhood

Turvey House and walled gardens are open to the public from May to September. The walk to the village will take you past animals and you must remember to shut gates or mayhem ensues. The Three Cranes serves excellent food and Three Fyshes has a super setting for a summer pint. The Falcon in Castle Ashby is a bit posher. Olney is a market town with boutiques and gift shops, Bedford is 15 minutes.

Local points of interest from Grace & Charlie Hanbury

  • Turvey House - Grade 1 listed house and gardens open to the public
  • Castle Ashby gardens and estate just 15 minutes away, with wild swimming and country retail shops
  • Woburn Abbey and Woburn Safari Park 20 minutes away
  • Lovely market town Olney just 5 minutes away
  • tennis courts in the village and zip line in the playground
  • Village shop selling local dairy and bakery products. The local butcher is wonderful too
