The
Experience

Deep copper baths, fibre optic chandeliers, a snug cinema for Sunday afternoons, a chic up-cycled bar for cocktails – that’s what you find at this gorgeous country-house hotel. It’s all the result of a remarkable renovation that blends old and new to great effect, and wherever you go something beautiful catches the eye: a curved mahogany door, polished wood floors, classical and contemporary art. Views from the front door stretch out over rolling hills. At the back, a large kitchen garden climbs up to fields, beyond which woodland walks wait. Back inside, you find high ceilings, vast windows, period colours and hungry wood-burners. Lamps hang in the restaurant, where you dig into local or home-grown food, perhaps game terrine, spicy cod, sticky toffee pudding. Fabulous rooms wait above. Four at the back are smaller and come with planked bedheads and garden views. Those at the front are bigger, with king-size beds, copper baths, perhaps a walk-in shower; all have robes and smart TVs. An outdoor pool is coming soon; beehives, a biomass boiler, and a whisky bar all wait, as does vibrant Bristol. Don’t miss it.

Location

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Guy Williams

  • Backwell House is a Country House with views of rolling hills to the other side of the valley. However.... we are also extremely well located within close proximity to Bristol. A short 8 minute drive to the city centre.
  • Our restaurant is open serving Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner from Wednesday through to Sunday lunchtime. A bar menu is available for guests staying Sunday to Tuesday. All of our food is either locally sourced or grown/raised on site.
  • We are conveniently located just 3 miles from Bristol Airport but far enough away from the flight path. We offer airport transfers during normal office hours, or sweet talk the staff and we can sometimes offer evening collections/drop offs.
  • We are surrounded by beautiful walks, whether it be an enchanted secret woodland walk, a stroll across the fields to a country pub or down the cycle path which takes you all the way in to Bristol.
  • Backwell House is located on the same side of the city as the infamous Clifton Suspension Bridge which is situated approximately 5 miles away.
  • Why not explore the rest of North Somerset whilst you're here? Such as Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury or the Mendips
