The Crown Inn

Amersham, Buckinghamshire

At the end of the Metropolitan line is the delectable Crown, authentic, historic, with 45 chic rooms and a charming cobbled courtyard

45 rooms

Rooms sleep 2 – 3

The Crown is where Hugh Grant got lucky with Andie MacDowell: ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ was filmed here. But that was before Ilse Crawford’s makeover. Now the Crown is an uber-chic dining pub in a plank-floored, New England style; the décor is charming, the cooking skilled and seasonal. Families are welcome, walkers’ dogs doze, staff are friendly and obliging. The wines are global, the ale is local (Marlow’s Rebellion), and the creaking, sloping floors are irresistible. There’s a beamed bar decorated in muted colours, with cool wing chairs by a brick fireplace and sheepskins on new-old country seats, and two rustic-elegant dining rooms, one with long trestle tables. Twice Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar offers his take on British cuisine in both dining rooms and the bar, so start with Driftwood goat’s cheese and baked beetroot carpaccio and follow with beautifully battered fish and chips. Bedrooms are understated and serene, those in the oldest part with the greatest character, those away from the kitchens the quietest. Breakfasts are fabulous.
