An inviting bolt hole in the grounds of a Victorian granary. Your sitting/dining space is airy with soaring beams, restful colours and a fresh contemporary feel. There’s a sofa, TV and nifty kitchenette and, through white curtains, a cow hide underfoot reminding you of the origins of the building and a king size bed topped with luxurious linen. Jo brings over breakfast: homemade granola, muffins and bread; at the weekends you can order a delicious Aga-cooked spread – lots of choice. Cambridge is an easy drive, and The Cowshed a treat to come back to: sit on the pond’s jetty and watch the moorhens while sipping a glass or two.

We couldn't have had a better base for our visit to Cambridge. Jo welcomed us warmly and with lovely bread and cakes. The accommodation is extremely comfortable, with a very handy kitchenette making a little self catering easy if you don't want to go out to one of the excellent recommendations of places to eat. Jo also provided everything we needed for a lovely breakfast. If the weather is kind be sure to sit with a glass by the "pond" (small lake) and watch the birds. When we were leaving Jo asked what could be done better, we couldn't think of anything!

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Jo Ward

  • Less than five miles from the bustling and beautiful city of Cambridge, we are located in a quiet village with walks from the door in all directions including the Pathfinder route.
  • Cambridge: As well as the majestic college buildings, our local city boasts independent shops, amazing architecture, inspiring museums + art galleries. You can’t come to Cambridge without punting along the River Cam, either with a chauffeur or on your own!
  • Ely, St Ives, Bury St Edmunds and Saffron Walden are all about a 30min drive away and make a nice day out. All have interesting markets and independent shops with tasty spots for lunch.
  • Several National Trust properties lie within a 30min drive. We love walking in the Capability Brown parkland on the WImpole Estate or strolling through the winter garden at Anglesey Abbey.
  • Duxford Imperial War Museum is half an hour away and is a huge historic airfield and museum of aviation history. Permanent exhibitions include American Air museum and Battle of Britain, there’s so much to see you may need more than a day!
  • Whether you walk along the river or arrive by punt, Granchester is a beautiful spot. The Orchard tearooms, with their informal deckchairs, were made famous by the Bloomsbury group and the ITV has recently been filming their 1950s detective series here.
