Deep in peaceful Cambridgeshire countryside with its big skies and open fields peppered with church steeples is Little Gatley. Once a Victorian cart barn now it’s a smart little bolthole for couples (and a child or babe-in-arms) seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Enter the high-ceilinged open plan living space: flagged floors, squishy sofa before the blazing wood-burner, grey beams. Everything in the galley kitchen is brand spanking new and you’ll be delighted with the Nespresso machine – wander outside with your coffee to your own pretty paved garden; and there are two further acres to roam. Glimpse the resident kingfisher if you’re lucky. The calming double (neat bathroom through here) is downstairs and there’s a small attic room upstairs with a single bed and space for a cot. Charming Heather lives next door, she settles you in with homemade cake, plenty of logs and fresh flowers; and she can tell you about her gorgeous garden with its river running through, interesting sculptures, formal boxes, pretty planting, trees and wildlife. Best of all, it’s lit up at night. It’s a hop to Cambridge and Woburn.
