Good local ales in a beamed bar, eclectic menus, a secluded garden with church views, and new-build rooms with a fresh, contemporary feel

Read guest comments

In pretty, peaceful Hinxton, close to Cambridge, the rambling Red Lion is a popular stopover in an area deprived of good inns. And its secluded garden, replete with dovecote, arbour and patio, overlooks the church: a lovely spot for peaceful summer sipping. Another draw is the buzzy atmosphere Alex has instilled in the beamed bar with its deep green chesterfields, worn wooden boards, cosy log fire and ticking clock. Own label ale Red & Black and others from the local micro brewery - Crafty Beers, Adnams, Woodfordes, Nethergate - add to the appeal, as do eclectic menus that list a range of classic pub dishes and more inventive specials, all at good prices. Pop in for a beef and horseradish sandwich or linger over venison with blackberry jus or wild mushroom fettuccine; tuck into delicious roast Norfolk chicken on Sunday. Puddings are to die for: sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce, lemon tart with mango coulis. Named after local beers and ciders, new-build rooms are comfortable and smart with a fresh, contemporary feel – lightwood furniture, wooden floors, crisp cotton on top-quality beds, fully tiled bathrooms. Breakfasts are a serious treat.

"Excellent. My wife had a heart problem whilst there & the staff were brilliant. Good food, good beer. We have since been to the Black Bull."

"We stayed at the Red Lion on our way south returning to our home in France after a short stay in the UK. The whole experience was extremely positive. The staff were friendly and helpful, the room was clean and very comfortable. We ate in the restaurant - a delicious meal with attentive but not over-intrusive service. Breakfast was good All in all we felt that for a special night away (it was our wedding anniversary) The Red Lion was good value for money."

"A gem of an inn, with friendly, helpful staff and well appointed rooms. The bar has great ales and a log fire. The main star has to be the food though - a superlative breakfast (best black pudding I've had in ages) and a dinner menu that sets it a cut above. You won't be disappointed."
