The Experience

The Ashton Estate is one of the best preserved Victorian/Edwardian model settlement in the country. Three miles from the village itself, down a long private lane, the Grade II* listed Lady Rothschild Dairy comprises three former cow houses around a cobbled yard. Immaculately thatched and renovated, they have been most luxuriously decorated inside. Sitting rooms are sociable, beds blissful, bathrooms and kitchens smartly fitted, and almost every room holds a piece of history: a ladder here, a hayrack there, a salt-lick holder, an impressive grain chute. In the communal garden to the side are three shepherds’ huts and barbecues. Living nearby and passionate about the place is Carol, who did much of the decorating herself. She’ll greet you warmly on arrival and will ensure you have a great time. Walking and wildlife watching are on the doorstep – stroll along the river Nene, spot badgers, deer, rabbits, red kites, foxes and an array of birdlife. Close by, the market town of Oundle has plenty of shops, bars and restaurants, Elton Hall gardens are stunning and Fotheringhay is ancient and atmospheric.

This was a wonderful and special place to stay. We were meeting a large group of family for the weekend, and this property proved to be perfect. We were so comfortable and well cared for, and it was a perfect space from everyone, from grandparents, to parents and young children. The team looked after us very well, the properties were beautifully presented, and both before and after our visit all our queries and requests were dealt with effectively. Would certainly recommend, and will find an opportunity to return!

We had another lovely stay in these cottages. They are beautiful, well equipped and the breakfast provided was delicious. The estate is lovely and the children enjoyed riding their bikes on the long private road. We saw lots of wildlife including deers on our walk to the local pub for lunch.

Helen, Halifax

A very special place to stay - especially if you are celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary. Much thought has gone into providing guests with a high degree of comfort, beautiful décor and fabulous space to enjoy being with family and friends in each house. The location is superb, set amid acres of woodland and fields and what seems like miles away from civilisation but is in fact only a couple of miles to an atmospheric village pub and restaurant. A shepherd hut and BBQ included too.

Seeing a second New Year at the Ashton Estate was as exquisite as the first. Our group stayed in the wonderful Renaissance Rooms having previously stayed in the equally sumptuous Moorland Manor. With all our home comforts catered for in the generous Kitchen we spent time cooking, eating, laughing before relaxing in the decadent Sitting/ Dining Room. The location and grounds are also perfect for a gentle walk to the local pub in Ashton or slightly further afield in to Oundle. Fabulous location for our group to meet, we will be there again very soon.

Jonathan, Twyford

We stayed in the Turner, Gainsborough & Newmarket houses as a big family celebration for my mum's 70th birthday. In the lead up, Carol was incredibly helpful and always swift to reply to our numerous questions! With 16 adults & 8 children, this was a perfect location to give us all space to come together but also spend time in smaller groups. We were lucky with the weather too, so could enjoy the beautiful surroundings for an afternoon walk in the sunshine. The properties are all beautifully kept, and made for a very comfortable & relaxing weekend. We would all would highly recommend a visit!

The neighbourhood

Still owned by the Rothschild family, Ashton Wold Estate is one of the few remaining Victorian/Edwardian era working farms in the country and has acres of ecologically important woodland – ask about farm tours, butterfly walks, tree walks with an expert, yoga lessons and cookery workshops.

Local points of interest from Carol Maibaum

  • Oundle (4 Miles), surrounded on three sides by the River Nene, is a beautiful stone built market town. The town centre has many stone houses over 300 years old, divided by narrow alleys and courtyards.
  • The Chequered Skipper in Ashton Village is a picturesque thatched country pub. About 3 Mile walk. Perfect venue for a family or corporate function or simply a relaxing drink. Outside catering also available.
  • Tap & Kitchen is a waterside restaurant and bar at Oundle Wharf. Great atmosphere . Ingredients sourced locally. Bar showcases beer from their sister and neighbour Nene Valley Brewery.
  • With a variety of habitats including wildflower meadows, woodlands and wetlands, the Nene Valley is one of the most important inland areas for wildlife in England. Great way to explore. Hire a canoe in Oundle!
  • Rutland Water. An internationally famous nature reserve. Ideal family day out - cycling, wildlife and adventure.
  • Stamford is idyllic enough to have formed the backdrop for television costume dramas such as Middlemarch and Pride & Prejudice. Independant traders create the perfect shopping experience.

You'll meet friendly and welcoming Carol, who manages the properties and lives on the estate with her husband and daughter. She previously worked in the restaurant trade in South Africa (where she is from) and in the hotel trade in Switzerland.
