The
Experience

You’ll feel a sense of history among the grandeur and opulence in your own private wing of the late Dame Miriam Rothschild’s home, one of seven grand holiday lets on this vast estate. The house is furnished with  original works of art– the majority of which are for sale.

Find a breakfast hamper for your first morning with local bacon, sausages and farm eggs; help yourself to fruit from the trees in season. What was once the ballroom is now a grand dining and sitting room, with original wood panelling and views of the extensive grounds – cook for yourselves or hire caterers, or walk one and a half miles to a very good pub, The Chequered Skipper, on Ashton village green.

There’s plenty to do nearby – walking or cycling through the woodlands on the estate, canoeing or kayaking on the River Nene, visiting stately homes such as Elton Hall and Lyveden New Bield or the historic market town of Fotheringhay.

Reviews

Those with a yearning to live like a member of the nobility for a short while will adore The Renaissance Rooms. One wing of Lady Rothschild's former home on the Ashton Estate is all yours - including beautiful grounds, a Shepherd's hut and woodland surrounding the property. Inside, the rooms are stunning; the original ballroom now a fabulous sitting and dining room, has beautiful antique furniture and wonderful artwork and sculptures adorning every surface. Bedrooms are huge and comfortable.

Location

The neighbourhood

Still owned by the Rothschild family, Ashton Wold Estate is one of the few remaining Victorian/Edwardian era working farms in the country and has acres of ecologically important woodland – ask about farm tours, butterfly walks, tree walks with an expert, yoga lessons and cookery workshops.

Local points of interest from Carol Maibaum

  • Oundle (4 Miles), surrounded on three sides by the River Nene, is a beautiful stone built market town. The town centre has many stone houses over 300 years old, divided by narrow alleys and courtyards.
  • The Chequered Skipper in Ashton Village is a picturesque thatched country pub. About 3 Mile walk. Perfect venue for a family or corporate function or simply a relaxing drink. Outside catering also available.
  • Tap & Kitchen is a waterside restaurant and bar at Oundle Wharf. Great atmosphere . Ingredients sourced locally. Bar showcases beer from their sister and neighbour Nene Valley Brewery.
  • With a variety of habitats including wildflower meadows, woodlands and wetlands, the Nene Valley is one of the most important inland areas for wildlife in England. Great way to explore. Hire a canoe in Oundle!
  • Rutland Water. An internationally famous nature reserve. Ideal family day out - cycling, wildlife and adventure.
  • Stamford is idyllic enough to have formed the backdrop for television costume dramas such as Middlemarch and Pride & Prejudice. Independant traders create the perfect shopping experience.
