Captain’s House

Falmouth, Cornwall

Lots to do from this big house. Walking, sailing, visit Pendennis Castle, take a ferry trip on the river. Or simply sit and watch it all

5 beds

Sleeps 8

A smartly-painted Grade II-listed townhouse in the heart of Falmouth (but surprisingly quiet) with the added bonus of two parking spaces and a garage. Inside is spotless and wonderfully homely with antiques and the odd bit of quirk; lots of light streams through proper sash windows and the harbour views from the top floor are glorious – the Captain must have loved sitting up here watching all the booty arrive by boat. There are two sitting rooms (one with an open fire) with comfy sofas, a bright and airy kitchen with a big range cooker and all the stuff you need to cook for a big crowd, a dining room with room around the table for all, a conservatory and a sunny patio with some planting and seating out the back. The master bedroom, with its own bathroom, is big enough to learn the waltz in, the others not much smaller and those at the front have grand views. All have good cotton sheets, high ceilings and pretty fabrics in curtains and soft furnishings. You will find fresh flowers, Cornish tea and coffee, milk and saffron buns – all else you bring yourselves. Explore the Quay and the Museum, take a boat trip, learn to sail.

Local points of interest from Carol Ballett

  • Our Grade II Listed home overlooks Falmouth Harbour. Leave your car at home as we are a short stroll to superb beaches, stunning coastal paths and all the fun of Falmouth.
  • Stroll down the hill into Falmouth in only 2 minutes and enjoy everything this great town has to offer from great shopping and eating plus art galleries and the many local events and activities happening in this festive town.
  • Get on the water, it really does give you a different perspective on the town: go fishing on a charter boat from Custom House Quay or take a yacht charter for the day, or take the ferry across to St Mawes or Flushing.
  • Walk to Pendennis Head, looking down into the dockyard as you pass, skirting Pendennis Castle and then sit on a bench at the tip of the headland to watch the boats go by. Then stroll on round the headland to Gyllyngvase Beach and enjoy a treat in its cafe.
  • Falmouth is steeped in maritime history and there is no better place to discover all the fascinating stories than the National Maritime Museum. Your ticket will last a year so buy it at the beginning of your holiday and pop in and out during your stay.
  • Buy the best ever fish and chips from the Harbour Lights restaurant, or a pasty from Oggy Oggy nearly opposite. You can take your pick of so many restaurants and try somewhere different each day of your stay. All of them walking distance from our home.
