The Experience

A pretty thatched cottage, and its neighbour, are perched at the entrance to Church Cove – a small rocky cove with temptingly clear water – nip down for a restorative swim, rock pool dipping, a picnic. It’s a good base to launch a kayak too. Wash off sandy feet in the boot room accessed through the sunny back garden.

Inside the light and bright open space has a cosy sitting room and smart kitchen. For rainy days there are boardgames for young and old and a Smart TV with Netflix, Prime and iPlayer. After supper (cooks will be happy with the Rangemaster) pour over maps at the big scrubbed dining table and plan tomorrow’s walk. You’re on the South West Coast Path, head to Cadgwith Cove Inn for Friday night sea shanties or Kynance Cove for swimming.

Bedrooms upstairs are snug and the sleek bathroom has a sea view from its little window. You’ll sleep soundly after all that bracing sea air.

The perfect Cornish coastal escape hidden in the wilds of the Lizard and a brilliant base to explore this remote peninsula. Not only is the cottage beautiful inside and out but there's plenty of things to do within walking distance. Church Cove is a few minutes' walk down the hill; from here you can hike for miles along the SW Coast Path in either direction.

The neighbourhood

Lizard village is a 5-minute stroll, try Ann's Pasties (legendary), Wavecrest Café for breakfast and The Top House Inn for a pint. Housel Bay Hotel has a private beach and smart restaurant. Visit Lizard Lighthouse on Lizard Point - climb to the top of the tower for amazing views. Further along the SW coast path is Kynance Cove and its turquoise waters. Trebah and Glendurgan gardens are both 16 miles.

Local points of interest from Emily Doherty

  • Church Cottage is 400m from the South West Coast path via a leafy walk down through Church Cove.
  • It's a five minute walk into Lizard Village for a fantastic breakfast, coffee or a delicious Cornish ice-cream.
  • World famous Kynance Cove with its turquoise waters and beach cafe, is a three mile walk along the coastal path from the cottage.
  • Church Cove is a quiet lane without passing traffic (as it leads to the sea) filled with thatched cottages and old fishing boats. It was Noel Coward's favourite Cornish cove.
  • You can learn to surf at sandy Poldhu Beach, a ten minute drive from the house.
  • The Lizard Peninsula is the southernmost point of the United Kingdom and is famous for it's black rocky cliffs, sparkling blue waters and dramatic big skies.
