Coxswain's Cottage

St Ives, Cornwall

An old fisherman’s cottage with super-smart interiors a 2-minute walk from sandy Porthmeor beach in the shadow of Tate St Ives

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

Small but perfectly formed: this is a spoiling retreat a mere hop and a skip from popular Porthmeor beach. Inside, your terraced fisherman’s cottage has been given a sleek makeover. Step off the (quiet) street into the hall, off here is a twin/superking bedroom and a living room with a cream L-shaped sofa. Take stairs up to two double en suite bedrooms; down to a smart ‘hammam’ family bathroom and a Shaker-style kitchen with Nespresso machine and pods. From here step out to a dinky patio, through a tunnel, and you’ll hit the beach. The compact kitchen and living room mean you’ll want to be out making the most of charming St Ives which has something for everyone: Tate St Ives, Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Minack Theatre and mile upon mile of rugged coastal path leading you west towards Zennor and Lands End. After all that exertion head back for a dreamy sleep on deliciously deep mattresses dressed in crisp white cotton covers. It’s practically unheard of around here, but you have the use of a private garage to park your car, for a daily fee. The only drawback: there are no sea views.

Local points of interest from Ben Shearer

  • St Ives is a creative wonderland. No visit is complete without a trip to the Tate or Barbara Hepworth Museum. Once you've got your creative juices flowing, why not take a class at the St Ives School of Painting - a 1min walk from the property.
  • Cornwall is full of excellent local produce and there are plenty of places that both celebrate and transform it into unforgettable food. Our current favourites in St Ives are the cocktails at Alba, tapas and sunset views at Porthmeor Beach Cafe.
  • The secret tunnel that opens directly onto Portmeor Beach makes Coxwain's the ultimate beach escape. Why not book yourself a surf lesson at the St Ives Surf School or rent a paddle board and take to the waves?
  • For a town of its size St Ives is blessed with an inordinate amount of beaches. There are 4 main beaches within walking distance of the town, each with a different character.
  • The bustling town of St Ives is full of wonderful cafes, shops and galleries. Be sure to check out all the wonderful pottery by stopping by Fish Pi, St Ives Ceramics and the famous Leach Pottery a bit further afield. Perfect for holiday souvenirs.
  • For those who love the thrill of adventure and activity, we highly recommend you hop in an air balloon and soar the skies of the South West.
