This is an upside-down house with the two B&B bedrooms downstairs – each has its own entrance from the back garden, and you wake to views over the sailing waters of St Mawes and the sea beyond. Every day Lucy puts out a fresh cake for afternoon tea – guests absolutely love what’s become something of a daily ritual and tell her that they ‘rush home to see what’s under the magic cake dome’.  Orange and Chocolate and Summer Fruit Gateau are firm favourites.

Your continental breakfast is laid out on a long table in the dining room, opening onto a balcony overlooking the sea. Lucy gives you freshly baked bread and croissants, homemade jams and compote, cereals and fruit salad, with special treats on Sundays. Children can come too – kit and toys can be provided as well as a cot and fold-out bed.

Sit out on your sunny patio, delve into books and magazines – and take a stroll to the sea, the castle and Lamorran Gardens.

The neighbourhood

St Mawes is a small seaside village on the point of the Roseland Peninsular. The waterfront is a ten-minute walk from the house and has gift shops, Co-op, pubs, hotels, butcher and a great bakery. There are a couple of beaches, lots of boating activity and a little ferry that goes between St Mawes and Falmouth. Visit the magical creekside church in St Just in Roseland nearby and National Trust Trelissick Garden.

Local points of interest from Lucy Cullen

  • It's a 10 minute walk to the quayside in St Mawes. With its clear turquoise water, lush tropical planting, & elegant white cottages, you could be in the Mediterranean. Relax with coffee on a waterfront terrace, or ice cream on 1 of the 3 beaches.
  • Explore the Fal River by boat. Take a ferry to Falmouth. Speed up river on a RIB cruise. Charter your own motor boat. Enjoy a slower pace of life by kayak or stand-up paddle board. Or just watch the world sail by from terra firma.
  • There are miles of wonderful walks right from the door. A guest favourite is the St Anthony Head loop which starts & ends with a tiny foot ferry from the harbour. Don't forget your swimming stuff for a refreshing dip on secluded beaches.
  • We are spoilt with gorgeous gardens, from the Italianate inspired Lamorran Gardens next door, & the tropical church gardens of nearby St Just in Roseland, to impressive National Trust Trelissick, & the magical Lost Gardens of Heligan.
  • Visit local landmarks to unearth fascinating history, including Henry VIII's St Mawes Castle, & the banks of the Fal Estuary which were the launch point for thousands of American troops destined for Omaha Beach in the D-Day landings.
  • Our favourite family day out starts with a walk along Towan Beach followed by coffee & a browse in the galleries of Portscatho, a dig on beautiful Porthcurnick Beach, & then lunch at the famous Hidden Hut. Holiday heaven!

The house is lived in by Lucy, Nigel and their son Harris – they moved here from Bristol in 2017. Lucy and Nigel are really welcoming hosts, and you're made to feel very much at home. They want guests to share this peaceful, special part of Cornwall.
