The Experience

Bask in the sheltered front garden; you can catch the sun all day. At the back are the sunsets and the sea. Here in Zennor (one pub, one church) you feel you’re on the edge of the world.

The exterior of this traditional cottage – one in a row of five – belies a stylish interior. From the pale pink Aga to the logs under the stair, all feels contemporary but characterful. The welcome hamper is generous with wine, scones and flowers, the bedrooms have views of the ocean or moors, and St Ives offers restaurants, shops, cafes and huge sands.

Set off early for the coastal path to St Ives, then catch the bus home. Stride across the fields for lunch at the Gurnard’s Head (2 miles) – or stroll 50 yards to the ancient Tinner’s Arms… for fresh crab sandwiches and a distant sea view.

As I arrived at this property I felt instantly calmed. The front garden was so welcoming and the house didn't disappoint with super stylish decor and modern touches while retaining a traditional feel. I would love to spend a week here walking and cosying up in front of the fire or sitting watching the sun go down over the sea with a glass of wine.

The neighbourhood

The hamlet of Zennor lies between St Ives (four miles) and Pendeen (seven), on the stunning B3306 coastal road. On one side, gorse scrubland stretches to the cliffs; on the other, there's moorland and ponies. You can walk for miles in all directions - or catch a bus in summer. For shops, galleries and restaurants, Penzance too is close (six miles). If you love off the beaten track, seek out Portheras Cove: it's wild, remote, and seven miles.

Local points of interest from Leila

  • Ivy Cottage is nestled in the beautiful village of Zennor, on the North West Coast of Cornwall. Zennor is steeped in history, being inhabited since the Bronze Age (around some 4000 years ago) and home to the medieval church of St Senara.
  • Built in the 1800s Ivy Cottage has an abundance of traditional charm, sea views and a luxurious cosy interior.
  • The coastal walks around Zennor and The Gurnard’s Head are some of the best on the South West Coast Path which is the longest of the country's National Trails and follows the entire coastline of Cornwall. Zennor to St Ives takes about 4hrs.
  • Zennor is home to the medieval church of St Senara famed for its legend of the Mermaid of Zennor.. Surrounded by granite buildings and cottages and is only a short stroll to the infamous 700 year old Tinner's Arms pub.
  • The South West Coast Path on its doorstep, you can enjoy a stunning coastal walk to the award winning Gurnards Head restaurant in one direction and St Ives with its glorious beaches and bustling cobbled streets in the other.
  • With some of the most beautiful and spectacular coastline in the country, Ivy Cottage is the perfect retreat for couples, honeymooners and walkers.

Friendly housekeeper Lorna lives two doors down and knows the region inside out. She also offers homemade meals on request. The owner lives in London, but has a local connection: her sister has married into the family that produces Moomaid of Zennor ice cream.
