The Experience

Carry morning coffee out onto the wrought iron balcony and watch the boats come and go in the lively harbour below you. Your four-storey townhouse is much more than a retreat between excursions, with a blend of new and vintage style giving a fresh but homely feel.

Ferry over to Polruan on the opposite headland, stroll to Readymoney Cove and St Catherine’s Castle on the edge of town. For fuller day trips you can hire a boat to whisk you down to the beach at Polridmouth or further along the coast, setting you up for a scenic hike back along the coastal path. There’s even the full 27 miles of the Saint’s Way, running across Cornwall from Fowey to Padstow, if you want a challenge.

Afternoons of board games and reading in the long lounge blur into an early evening bottle of wine on the sun deck or lively preparations round the chunky kitchen range with something freshly-caught. This is a fun house for a group of friends or for a family reunion.

Reviews

We had a fantastic stay at La Folie, the house is fantastic and ideally located. All the communications with Beverley, the owner, were answered very quickly. I would thoroughly recommend staying here, and we'd certainly love to come back.

I always stay in self catering properties and choose my accommodation very carefully. I "need" an open fire, an Aga, plenty of bathrooms, a washer and dryer and a spectacular location. This was it!!! What a fabulous town and a perfect villa! The attention to detail is exceptional and I couldn't have asked for more. Lots of stairs...but great views! Thank you for sharing your home with us. The memories are so special.

We adore La Folie. This is our 5th stay in this beautifully stylish villa. Every year we look forward to returning. The sea views are to die for. The sheltered decking has views across the estuary and is a real sun trap. The house is furnished to an impeccable standard, eclectic and funky, everything you could want. Excellent wifi means you can keep in touch with the real world if you need to. Fowey is charming and pretty. It has great restaurants (particularly Sam's and Fowey Hall). The owner, Beverley, is a pleasure to deal with. Chose La Folie and you won't be disappointed.

We loved La Folie. The house was fantastically welcoming and well kitted-out. I can't think of anything we wanted that we couldn't find! It was a welcome change from renting a cottage in the middle of nowhere - we all enjoyed being able to walk into the middle of Fowey, eating and drinking to our hearts' delight! The deck in particular was a lovely addition, taking full advantage of the stunning views. I suppose the only downsides were having to park the car quite far away and 1 of the 3 couples having to sleep in what was very definitely a children's room with v hard mattresses!

Location

The neighbourhood

Fowey is a pleasant combination of lively bustle and ancient narrow backstreets hiding antique shops and galleries. Wander through town and stop at weathered old waterfront pubs, The Dwelling House for high tea or the less traditional Sam's for fine fresh seafood. The Saint's Way runs across the county to Padstow and the coastal path is right on the doorstep, but there are also great local walks and circular routes to Lantivet Bay and Lansallos. The river Fowey is great for kayaking, boating and fishing too.

Local points of interest from Beverley Edge

  • Daphne du Maurier inspired Festival of Words and Music held in May each year; Fowey Christmas Market is one of the best in Cornwall
  • The Eden Project is only six miles away plus several gardens within reach including Lost Gardens of Heligan and Trewithen
  • Surfing at Watergate Bay in under 45 minutes; golf at Carlyon Bay in under 20 minutes
  • Messing about in boats. A river cruise, sunset sail or a high speed adventure
  • Get the 'Upstairs, Downstairs' experience at Lanhydrock owned by the National Trust
  • An excellent base to explore the entire Cornish coastline and its varied attractions and places of interest on foot, by car or by boat.

Introducing

Beverley Edge

After six years of visiting Fowey, Beverley had “the stupid idea” and fell in love with La Folie. She and her architect husband transformed the townhouse into its current blend of modern and vintage, adding the sun deck and some decorative panache, but keeping the Victorian charm. It's the family's holiday home too and you'll find the basics ready when you arrive. Beverley doesn't want her guests to have to go and buy tea bags just after they've shown up. She'd rather you treat it like your own home.
