Little Cottage

Penzance, Cornwall

Even in gloomy weather this house will be filled with light - and every comfort and extra you could think of. A great space in a fab spot

A sleek Alex Michaelis building. This white box, with huge windows on each side for light to surge through, sits bang on Praa Sands between Helston and Penzance and will please lovers of good design – views are stunning. Inside find polished concrete, white walls and vast spaces: a large open-plan room incorporates the sitting area with generous sofas and a log-burner, the big dining table and the very snazzy kitchen (you’ll find every mod con including an espresso machine and a boiling water tap). There’s also a teenager’s (well, chaps…) dream of another sitting room with more sofas for flopping but also flat-screen, X-box gaming and DVD. Upstairs to regal-sized bedrooms (and a bunk room), beautifully dressed, and bathrooms with freestanding baths (sporting portholes) alongside more windows. Sand-covered surfers can walk straight into the downstairs wet room and find plenty of space for hanging wetsuits. There’s a large, sparse garden and a roof terrace but you’ll want to use the beach for being outdoors in any case. Unstinting extras include champagne, flowers, a picnic hamper, wetsuits and body boards.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from

  • Little Cottage sits a stones throw from one of the best surfing beaches in the area.. Praa Sands, Praa Sands is hard to beat… but we also love Perrenporth. Poldhu is good for learner surfing and Sennen is beautiful, especially at sunset!
  • For a restaurant recomendation - try Kota Kal, fabulous Asian fusion as well as great fish and chips. Perfectly situated at the head of the harbour in the bustling fishing village of Porthleven, Kota Kai enjoys uncompromised views and is family friendly.
  • Another fantastic option is the Porthgwidden Beach Café. Just a 20 minute drive away, this old whitewashed sail loft with a sunny terrace is perfect for breakfast and lunch with spectacular views of Godrevy Lighthouse.
  • Mike Lacy Gallery is exceptional. Mike Lacey, owner of "Waves Gallery" in Cornwall produces stunning images of the ocean and waves from Cornwall and around the world.
  • Kestle Barton is an ancient Cornish farmstead situated above the Helford River. Following an award-winning conservation and conversion project all the beautiful old buildings have new uses, one of the barns becoming an elegant gallery.
  • Don't forget about Dan Joel Surf School. He will come to the house and give private lessons and supplies boards and wetsuits etc. He is totally brilliant!
