The
Experience

Oak floors sweep throughout this big Georgian house, high on the hill overlooking the sea and Porthcothan beach a ten-minute stroll. D H Lawrence, who stayed here, wrote: “We came here yesterday and we love it”, this “old farmhouse with space and largeness and a sort of immemorial peace, a calm that belongs to the earth.” The setting is dreamy, the refurbishment is luxurious. Enter to find two polished sitting rooms full of light, with wood-burners, rugs, bean bags and sofas; a kitchen with an Aga, electric oven and heaps of top kit; a pristine dining room with a table for 12; a conservatory full of sunshine; and six bedrooms, each with a glimpse of the sea. With Padstow five miles away, Trevose Golf Club two and a run-around garden outside, it’s a great escape for families. Mattresses are deep, duvets are soft down, bathrooms have Mexican tiles… there’s even a sand ‘n’ surf shower with a super steam button! That lovely sandy cove below is sheltered and reveals rock pools at low tide. Such a good spot: a small general stores next to the beach, a Rick Stein inn two miles down the road, coastal walks abound. The owners, keen to ensure you are happy, will personally settle you in.

Reviews

Lovely house, great position. Very welcoming and helpful owners. Left with fantastic memories of a lovely 3 generational holiday. None of us wanted to leave!

Patricia, Shaftesbury

There is no better place to enjoy the environs of North Cornwall than Porthcothan House. You have the fabulous beach on your doorstep, but many others nearby (our favourite is Hawkers' Cove, a real gem). There is Trevose Golf course, Padstow (with the Camel Trail and all the delicious restaurants) stunning cliff top walks and other attractions for a rainy day. The house itself is superb with excellent facilities and beds. We keep coming back because we love it so much.

Antony, London

The house is fabulous and has lots of space. We had a family holiday for 7 studying/writing adults and it was perfect. The atmosphere is classic Cornish farmhouse. There is everything you could need to cook up a special meal and have a celebration. It was really great to have a food delivery already put away when we arrived. The beds are wonderfully comfy and the views down to the cove enchanting. The walks are fabulous and the area has the best of Cornwall. Wild windy cliffs and some gourmet food in Padstow. The trip was a real tonic and we would all love to visit again, immediately!

We booked a family holiday with 10 of us to celebrate my 65th birthday and found Jane and Tim most helpful towards everything that was needed, from organizing food to arrive before we did, babysitting for a night we were going out, restaurant recommendations, family places to visit and beaches to explore. Tim recommended a chef to cook on the birthday evening and the food was great. The house was wonderfully spacious and the kitchen a delight to work in. We cannot praise it highly enough!
