A beautiful hotel close to the beach with a contemporary feel running throughout – bedrooms, some with balconies, are a treat

This Edwardian villa above Portminster Beach had seen better days, but Natasha and Mihaka like a challenge, so they bought it, closed it and spent five months renovating from top to toe. The results are gorgeous, a chic new world with airy interiors that swim in seaside light. You’re at the bottom of the hill, about 200 metres back from the beach. Bedrooms have a deliciously simple style: off whites, smart fabrics, colourful local art. Those at the front have sea views, four have balconies, one at the back has its own deck. You’ll find rugs on wood floors, stylish furniture, perhaps wooden planks covering one wall. Sparkling bathrooms have power showers, the odd claw-foot bath, then robes and REN oils. Downstairs, a big open-plan room at the front has sofas and armchairs on one side, then tables for yummy breakfasts on the other, but sneak round the back and find a cocktail bar, not a bad spot to recuperate after a hard day on the beach. Light bites are on tap, but good restaurants wait in town, a five-minute stroll. Don’t miss Tate St Ives or the Barbara Hepworth Museum.
