The Experience

Polruan is a very old fishing and boat building village surrounded by water on three sides. Your cottage is near the Blockhouse, built in the 14th century to protect the harbour from pirates and the French. The bedrooms are small but very comfortable with king-size beds; one can become a twin room, the other has beautiful harbour views, and they share a bathroom. Upstairs is the living area with more views: the village to one side, the boat-studded estuary on the other.

Join the South West Coast path 50 yards from the door for bracing walks: to Polperro in just over two hours (depending on how fit you are) or further, and then get a taxi or bus back. Catch the foot ferry to Fowey from the village for independent shops, restaurants, cafes and bars. In August the Royal Regatta will be right outside your door.

You’ll find supermarkets in Saltash, Liskeard or St Austell but you can top up at a good general store in the village. Settle by the wood-burner with books, games, Smart TV and music or wander down to one of the pubs in the village for dinner. You can do without your car for most things.

Reviews

I liked the slightly quirky layout of September Cottage, with fabulous open water views you could sit all day and watch the boats and birds coming and going from the Fowey River. Approached on foot down a fairly steep hill, you'll improve your fitness but its worth it. Polruan is well served with pubs, cafe and little shops so if you wish you can go carless all week and stay easily local.

From the moment of our first enquiry the owner could not have been more helpful and her attention to detail ensures that the cottage is warm, comfortable and well presented. Other reviews prepared us for the steep but short walk to the allocated parking space - invaluable, but there was also easy parking in the public car park a short walk along the coastal path away. It's an ideal cottage for a cosy winter break in an area which is well worth exploring, with a range of fascinating and beautiful walks, literally on the doorstep. I loved going down to Menabilly /Manderley!

Joanna, Malvern

September Cottage is a delightful place to stay. Very comfortable and well set out with wonderful view over the Fowey estuary and harbour. Really helpful to have a parking space although be prepared for a steepish walk to it. Great walks from the cottage and other Cornish attractions are close by such as Lanhydrock House and the Lost Gardens of Heligan

Rachel, Worcestershire

The cottage was lovely, had everything we needed, and the views from the lounge were a joy. We particularly loved being able to park the car when we arrived and not having to use it for the rest of our stay, taking advantage of the regular boats over to Fowey. We were even lucky enough to see dolphins one day! A real treat of a break, thank you

Daniel, Exeter

This is the quintessential Cornish cottage. Inside it is cosy and quaint. Slate on the floor. Distressed furniture. Outside the water surrounds you on three sides within about 25 m of the house. The most pronounced feature of the house is the lounge which faces backwards, not out to see, but in to the estuary over the harbour. It is simply stunning.

Location

The neighbourhood

Polruan is a quiet little village on the opposite side of the water from Fowey. It is approached along long, winding country lanes or by ferry. It has a couple of pubs which do good food, a tea shop, a bakery and the general store. You're on the South West Coast Path for fabulous walking. Try Hall Walk which will take you to Daphne du Maurier’s house and an excellent pub, the Old Ferry Inn.
