The Granary

Newquay, Cornwall

Escape the bustle of Newquay to an old-fashioned courtyard cottage and studio in a sheltered valley, perfect for weekend breaks with the dog

2 places

Sleeping from 2 – 4

Swing through the sheltered Lappa Valley, to a lovely hamlet with a 1630s watermill and trout-filled stream – beautiful at any time of year. The trains that once trundled past are now silent: ducks and geese quack around the poppy-lined pond and deer drink from the stream. The disused tracks now form a tree-lined secret garden, perfect for family barbecues. The Granary, the little stone and cob cottage, is upside-down with the bedrooms at the bottom. Across the courtyard, past the mill wheel, is The Bowgie, a studio for two – both are super dog-friendly with plenty of trails that run behind the cottages and acres of grounds.Newquay and Crantock Beach are minutes away by car (buckets, spades, wind-breaker provided), great for a day out, or head to Watergate Bay for a special supper at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen, right on the beach.

The neighbourhood

You’re in an idyllic little hamlet with a farm shop and cream teas just two miles away. It’s a 400-yard walk to the nearest National Trust property, Trerice House, and about the same to the Lappa Valley mini railway. Just 10 minutes down the road is the hubbub of Newquay, where you can watch the hot-shot surfers (or join in!).

Local points of interest from Nadia & Rupert Ridout-Jamieson

  • We have one acre of grounds to walk the dog in, have a BBQ in the “secret” garden on the old disused Newquay to Sheppard’s train track
  • Crantock beach is only 4 miles to the west, park in the NT car park and enjoy the dunes and vistas whilst walking the dog
  • The Plume of feathers in Mitchell is 3.5 miles or just 10 Mins. It is traditional a Coaching Inn with a separate well executed spacious modern dining area, which has a convivial atmosphere and reasonable food. Can get busy so worth booking on 01872 510387
  • Jamie Oliver’s 15 restaurant is at Watergate Bay: Tip if your are fly driving have a long lunch before heading up the hill to the airport
  • The Camel Trail from Bodmin to Padstow is 15 miles or 20 Mins away, Tip: start the cycle in Wadebridge (bike hire available) and have lunch in Padstow, amble back in the afternoon
  • The Eden project is only 15 miles or 20 mins away; Tip: go in spring when the bulbs are out, then treat yourself in the warm Biomes

Nadia & Rupert Ridout-Jamieson

Nadia and Rupert Ridout-Jamieson fell in love with The Granary on their many bike rides from Newquay; when it came up for sale in 2007 they snapped it up. They live in the main mill house and are on hand to greet new arrivals. Nadia works in London and flies in on weekends, but Rupert’s always around to help.
