The Experience

A long, unmade road takes you through trees, eventually opening out into a small farmstead and the Barn. Its south-facing decking overlooks an orchard and the owners’ home is just next door. You can’t hear anything except the trees rustling and birds chirruping.

Mark and Bryher are warm and kind and leave you fresh flowers, butter, just-laid eggs, Cornish soaps, treats and toys for children. Your kitchen is at the end of the open-plan barn with plenty of workspace and all the gear even a fussy cook wants. You can buy pork, lamb and eggs from the farm and the fresh fish man comes on Thursdays; order a Riverford Organic veg box ahead.

There are 12 acres of farmland with woods for den building, plus animals to feed and a myriad of walking trails. Join the public footpath just beside you for a walk to the local pub then a spot of crabbing in the creek at Point Quay. Return to light the wood-burner on chilly evenings, or fire up the barbecue when it’s balmy and listen to the owls hoot as the stars make their grand entrance.

Reviews

We had the most delightful stay and can’t wait to return. Everything was perfect - peaceful, quiet, well equipped and wonderful hosts. We travelled with our dog, and all loved it. Thank you for making our weekend so relaxing - it was the perfect Cornish Tonic

Amy, London

This is a delightful place; superbly spacious, clean and well-maintained accommodation with walks and views on the doorstep. The hosts are so amenable and welcoming, providing all the local information you need. It is a home from home - Bryher has thought of everything - fresh flowers, soap, tissues, not forgetting the beautiful eggs from the chickens in the orchard. If you need a backup meal for home, the well-stocked Spa shop in the village has the Cooks frozen range, and the staff are very helpful!

We had a glorious stay at the Old Barn for the full week we were there. We came for a wedding, so this was a special trip, particularly as we were joined by our son (an A&E doctor) who needed a rest. The setting is green and lovely, the old barn is immaculate, and all the rooms are filled with comfort and ease. Everything was well nigh perfect. Wonderful communications beforehand, and then flowers and eggs and bread and all we could need waiting for us, and a list of places to visit and to eat in: Bryher's efficiency and kindness made our stay glorious. I intend to go back, every year!

Nicola, London

We arrived to be greeted by an excellent cream tea which was most welcome after the journey. The accommodation was perfect for us - quiet, plenty of space for a couple and a dog and great dog walks nearby. Bedroom was very comfortable. Good recommendations by our hosts for food and drink and other activities. Would certainly book again.

Brian, Newbury

It was our first visit to the Old Barn with my hubby & dogs for an extended weekend break and we were warmly welcomed by Bryher & Mark. Surroundings and accommodation were lovely, everything thought off. Hope to revisit in the near future to take advantage of the many dog friendly walks within the vicinity & enjoy visiting more pubs x a must for newbies should be The Standard pub @ Portscatho & IndiDog @ Falmouth

Maxine, Oxfordshire

The Old Barn was very comfortable and warm with excellent facilities and provisions. Bryher welcomed us with a delicious Cornish cream tea which was very much appreciated. The homemade scones and jam are to be highly recommended. Communication with Bryher during booking and prior to our arrival was excellent. Bryher and Mark were very welcoming and provided a wealth of information on walks, beaches and eateries. We hope to return soon

Another fabulous escape to this idyllic place. If you need some escapism this is the ideal location. Tranquil setting in a beautiful barn. The farm is beautifully kept with fabulous walks on your doorstop and afar. So many beautiful beaches nearby and wonderful places to eat. Cannot recommend highly enough. Bryher and Mark the hosts are fabulous and we loved learning about the farm, the animals and location. Perfect for our 10 year old! Just a perfect place all round!

Lindsay, Henley on Thames

We had a lovely stay at Bryher and Mark’s cottage. ‘The Old Barn’ is situated at the end of a farm lane with several scenic walks from the cottage itself helpfully described by Mark and Bryher. The creekside walks were a firm favourite. It was also very easy to access other areas of interest such as the Roseland peninsula, Falmouth and Truro while the gardens at Trelissick were almost adjacent! The cottage itself was very comfortable and the welcome provided by Bryher and Mark was much appreciated..a great place to stay.

Jane, Gerrards Cross

We had a magical stay at the barn with our little girl. Everything was as described. Lovely little touches like the delicious cream tea on arrival and fresh milk & eggs. The barn was very clean and had all amenities you need. We loved coming out of the barn and seeing the chickens roaming free and our little girl loved feeding the sheep apples from the orchard across from the barn. We would highly recommend staying here and can’t wait to return.

Jayne, Bournemouth

Will we book again; yes. Accommodation was perfect exactly what we wanted. Bryher and Mark are wonderful hosts. Pre-booking arrangements were timely, clear and simple. The barn was airy and cool, essential when we had the hot week in August ! The main open plan living area was a perfect size with good space for cooking, eating and relaxing. Bedrooms down stairs were spacious and cool. Bathroom had all we needed. Everything was clean tidy and well equipped. Everything worked. To be welcomed with a cream tea after a long drive was a great treat. The location is perfect. Quiet, but easy to g

We stayed with our toddler & Jack Russell. Excellent and quick comms w/ Bryher beforehand who also very kindly took delivery of our food ahead of our arrival. We checked in at 11pm which was easy and lovely to have a cream tea as a late snack after a long journey! The location superb for travelling north & south and the barn was extremely well equipped with everything & more! It’s rare to find a place in the middle of the countryside which is both peaceful, child & dog friendly! We didn’t do much walking in the end but great to have somewhere to walk the dog without having to travel anywhere!

Emma, Cambridgeshire

We booked a week at the Old Barn and it gave us everything we were looking for in a break, including sunshine! The setting is so peaceful and secluded. The barn is immaculate, incredibly spacious and finished to a very high standard with gorgeous fresh flowers and a cream tea on arrival. The kitchen was very well-equipped. We loved relaxing in the sunny courtyard and had several BBQs on the terrace. Bryher and Mark are such welcoming hosts who are on hand if needed with fresh eggs or suggestions of where to visit. It was lovely to have so many many walks from the door. Would highly recommend!

Amy and Jez, Crediton

We have just returned from a wonderful few days staying at The Old Barn. Bryher and Mark were so kind and helpful, not least in welcoming our booking at short notice. The cottage is bright, warm, extremely clean and comfortable and really well equipped. It is an excellent base with many places to walk close by or slightly further afield and large gardens to explore. The walks from the house are gorgeous, through the woods and down to the creek and the wild spring flowers were prolific and wonderful. We feel so lucky to have found this place and will definitely return, hopefully for longer

Penny and Steve, Bromyard

What a lovely spot with sunshine and flowers in bloom, we really enjoyed the local paths and coastal walks on your door step plus a great base to explore further. Mark & Bryher's cosy barn conversion tucked away also makes a nice place to relax and chill out. Somewhere we would return to.

Darren & Suzie, Dorset

Beautiful barn conversion with everything we could need, set in perfect Cornish countryside. Bryher and Mark were great hosts and it was lovely to arrive to a cream tea and flowers. Ideal spot for country walks or for exploring everything Cornwall has to offer. Very strongly recommended.

Stephen, Salisbury

We feel so lucky to have found The Old Barn for our holiday in Cornwall. It is in the perfect spot ll's most lovely to visit some of Cornwall's most lovely towns and more secluded hayes and inlets. The barn was perfect for our stay with our 2-year-old with plenty of space indoor and out. Our daughter, Evie, loved feeding the chickens and playing with Makeral the farm cat. the best thing for me was the fact we could walk out the door and do some amazing walks, perfect for those wanting longer or shorter routes (we did a walk thorugh fields to a pub with our two-year-old and no buggy).

Penny, London

Tastefully converted barn in very peaceful surroundings. Ideal spot for walkers since footpaths abound directly from site. Bryher and Mark are wonderful hosts . We had dogs with us who enjoyed their many countryside walks and walks to the Creek. Within a half hour pleasant walk from the barn is " The Soup Bowl and Ladle" We visited 3 times- good gastro pub with very well trained staff. All in all a wonderful holiday - thank you Bryher and Mark. The only cautionary note would be - the Barn could be difficult for anyone with mobility issues. An Oasis in the desert of Life !!!

Paul, Wrexham

We had a lovely week here in early May exploring the local area and felt very at home. Bryher left fresh made scones and a box delicious eggs from her hens which were so welcome during these covid times. Other touches that we particularly liked were the local soap and well organized rubbish system. We could walk locally without having to drive anywhere which was a huge bonus! Thank you for making us feel so welcome!

Letitia, London

A very clean, comfortable and cosy barn tucked away in a quiet rural location yet only a few mins drive to local amenities. Some great walking right from the door and two pubs both within comfortable walking distance - just a shame they weren't fully open when we were there, due to COVID. Bryher and Mark give you your space but are always happy to share their local knowledge and suggest places to visit.

Nigel, Maidenhead

Absolutely idyllic setting in a beautifully restored barn. Mark and Bryher are the perfect hosts who were very patient with our children who were very keen to help with the animals. Ideally placed to visit Cornwall. We will most definitely be returning.

Location

The neighbourhood

You can walk to the village shop at Carnon Downs in about 20 minutes. Equidistant is Point - a small, very pretty village with a chapel on a promontory where Penpol Creek meets Restronguet Creek. Truro is a short drive for really good restaurants, Falmouth just a bit further for the National Maritime Museum and the ferry to St Mawes. You're near to gentle beaches on the south coast for days out with a picnic or wavy north coast sands for surfing and bodyboarding.

Local points of interest from Bryher & Mark Hole

  • Amble down the various footpaths to the creek. Then walk along the old tramway marvelling at the sheer beauty and the abundant birdlife. The Old Quay Inn at historic Devoran is well placed for a good lunch.
  • Loe Beach is a great watersports beach where you can hire kayaks and boats or have lessons. Alternatively, you can soak up the local, nautical atmosphere in the excellent beach café. (5 mins away by car or 45 mins walk alongside the creek.)
  • NT Trelissick is 5 mins away and has a beautiful country house and garden set in an old Cornish estate with stunning maritime views and lovely woodland walks. From the jetty you can hop on a Fal river boat to discover Falmouth by sea.
  • The award winning 13th Century Pandora Inn is 15 min drive. Its spectacular setting on the edge of Restronguet Creek, it's thatched roof and low beamed ceilings are timeless. The jetty is the perfect spot for kids to go crabbing making everyone happy.
  • Cycle along nearby Bissoe Trail on traffic free paths through Cornwall’s historical mining landscape. From the calm of Devoran on the S Coast to the rugged fishing village of Portreath on the N coast with a great Cornish pub halfway.
  • The King Harry Ferry allows you to avoid congested roads and enjoy a short scenic river crossing to the beautiful Roseland Peninsula. Here you can explore the quiet sandy beaches, and quaint fishing villages.

Introducing

Bryher & Mark Hole

Mark and Bryher have been here for quite some time now. They first of all renovated their own lovely home then started work on the Barn. Bryher is always out and about on the farmstead looking after her animals and the garden. They both love sharing their place with like-minded country lovers who will enjoy all that they've got to offer. You'll also meet Madge the terrier, Lurcher cross Isla and lots of sheep and hens.
