The Experience

Tregoose is a handsome, late-Regency country house surrounded by rolling countryside. Lovely, comfortable, period bedrooms have antiques, views onto the garden and pretty bathrooms. At the head of the Roseland Peninsula, this is a great ensemble: house, hosts and charming pets. Alison has also created a lovely garden – formal at the front, wilder to the rear and side. Five fat Irish yews and a tumbledown wall were the starting point… but having reconstructed the walls to create a sunken garden, things started to look up. The L-shaped barn was a good backdrop for planting, so in went yellow privet, flame-coloured alstroemerias, show-stopping Crocosmia solfaterre and agapanthus for contrast. The sunken walled garden protects Aloysia citrodora, leptospermum, and Acacia baileyana purpurea. Palm-like dracaena, Monterey pines and cypresses and the Chusan palm do well, as does the spectacular Rhododendron arboreum. Snowdrops flower from November to March – spectacular. A potager supplies produce for dinners and flowers for the house, and Alison knows all about Cornish plants and gardens.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Alison O'Connor

  • Hidden Hut - not so hidden these days but still a fun place to eat and we will lend the plates and cutlery.
  • Lost Gardens of Heligan and the Eden Project- both must see places and Heligan can be visited again and again as it is always changing.
  • Coastal Walks- Along the beach of Pendower and Calne when the tide is out- you may meet horses and you will meet dogs. Ff you are lucky you might see the local pair of choughs. Or for the fitter visitor a cliff top walk from the Nare Head to Portloe.
  • Uncrowded beaches- Apart from Calne the two Porthollands and also Portluney with the amazing backdrop of Caerhays Castle or Vault beach full of shorelarks and butterflies.
  • Unknown villages- Ruan Lanihorne with an award winning pub and a charming walk past wader crowded mud flats to Sett bridge and Lamorran Woods beyond. It is only known to the locals.
  • Trewithen Gardens- Half a mile from Tregoose – These Gardens are world famous for Spring flowering treees and shrubs and now a lot of new planning and clearing is taking place so an exciting place to visit.
