Helford, Cornwall

A rustic riverside retreat on the southern bank of the river Helford. Play Swallows and Amazons, return to the warm stove

6 beds

4 bedrooms

Sleeps 8

Twist along ever narrower country lanes to arrive at this renovated wooden structure, tucked under the main house, with uninterrupted views over the river and the woods below. It’s ramshackle and perfectly tranquil.

Step inside to find hand-crafted and vintage furniture, Victorian bathroom fittings and lots of nautical artefacts collected by owner Greg, a sculptor and master woodworker. You eat by the huge French windows which lead onto a veranda; magic on balmy nights with a barbecue. One of the bedrooms is in an old railway carriage – lovely for a couple wanting a bit of space and cosy with its own wood-burner.

You can hire a boat and spend time exploring the estuary, wild swimming, fishing or just messing about. Fun to gather up a picnic, pile in the boat and find a pebbly cove to rest in. You’ve four acres of woodland to trample through too.

Entrance to Tremerlin with decking and seating area at the front

The neighbourhood

Tremerlin is set in 8 acres of private woodland. The closest village is Helford, half a mile away, where you’ll find a village store and pub, the Shipwright Arms. Helston 11 miles away has a wide range of shops, supermarkets and restaurants. At Sailaway St Anthony, around 4 miles, you can charter a boat to moor at the property and historic Falmouth is a 20-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Greg Powlesland

  • Tremerlin was first established in 1927 as a yachting base by Treve and Murial Holman, he of the famous mining foundry in Camborn. An example of their works may be found in the winch shed on Tremerlin quay.An original steam winch reclaimed from south Crofty
  • Greg and Katie keep their 1920,vintage yacht Patna at Tremerlin when not away sailing. The tender to Patna was used in the older film version of Swallows and Amazons! The quay and slipway are ideal for accessing the river via boat for exploring on the tide
  • The Helford river is a special area of scientific interest and a concervation area.Tremerlin is surrounded by national trust woodlands, walks and farmland of ancient Kessel Barton, now housing a fine contemporary art gallery in a restored barn.10 mins.away.
  • Tremerlin was part of Kessel which in iron age times featured a settlement described on the map as an" ancient round".This Lizard area has a remarkably gentle landscape; rolling hills and copse woodland with cornish stone hedged fields of unspoilt charm.
  • Tremerlin is a haven for wildlife.Occasional deer and fawn, badger, fox, stoat and toad.Peregrin falcon, hoopoo, swift and greencrest. Kingfisher, egret,Great northern diver and gannet,Dolphins,Seal oyster and scallop, sea mouse and sign of otter on the foreshore
  • From the apartment secret pathways [watch your footing] lead from open flat lawns down through glades of huge tree ferns, magnolia, camellia and honeysuckle festooned ancient oaks ending up at the impressive quay down river and the lookout studio upriver
