The Experience

Shoot past the tourists to land in the Eden Valley with its vast hills, moody skies, single track roads and majestic river running through it. The house is pretty in the local sandstone pink with woodwork and sash windows painted in the estate colours. Cook together in the sociable kitchen warmed by a humming Aga, eat at a table in the bay window overlooking the water, looking out for ducks, swans and geese. Find homemade biscuits and a bottle of wine waiting.

Take a book to the separate sitting room and unwind by an open log fire on comfy sofas; fabrics are vibrant, rugs come in bright colours, an eclectic collection of art hangs on the walls and every window has stunning views framed by thick curtains. Bedrooms upstairs have high ceilings and big beds with feather and down pillows; bathrooms gleam and the prevailing feel is one of light and warmth.

Bring paddle boards and kayaks, barbecue on the terrace, make happy memories.

Reviews

Honestly the most comfortable rental we have ever stayed at in the most idyllic surroundings. We loved the house and the lake. Our welcome basket was an unexpected treat. We went on walks as a family and enjoyed the bird life of the lake. A memorable holiday. We hope to return.

We had a wonderful stay at Abbott Moss! Everything about it was just perfect - a beautiful home in an exquisite setting and great communication with the housekeeper. It was very difficult to say goodbye. Thank you Abbott Moss!

Kirsten, London

Abbotts Moss is such a special place for our family. It feels like home from home, with space and peace and comfort for each member of the family. Waking up to the lake view; watching a movie by the fire; enjoying morning coffee at the kitchen table in complete silence: it’s all a tonic for the soul. Julia (the house keeper) leaves us perfectly clean white beds, eggs from the best chickens in the world, and cake and wine on arrival- we couldn’t ask for more care, comfort, cleanliness! We will return for our fifth visit when we can!

A beautifully appointed, handsome house in a stunning setting. Perfectly placed for all the Lake District spots but away from the crowds. We loved our stay at Abbot Moss. So peaceful and with everything you could possibly need with a well stocked kitchen, games even blankets and dog towels. The decor and furnishings were stunning.

Sarah, Faringdon

An exquisite place to stay - stunningly interior-designed and luxurious whilst also being relaxed and functional. That’s a combination which is hard to achieve and Abbots Moss does it just perfectly. We had a lovely stay, thank you.

Ceri, Derbyshire

Perfect remote spot to relax and unwind. Lovely views. Great area for wild swimming. Delicious homemade cake on arrival. Just absolutely fabulous.

A beautiful house in a fantastic location. Equipped to the highest standard - it must have been a complete van full from John Lewis!! The beds were all very comfortable indeed and the fine cotton linen was lovely. The garden furniture was very comfortable and a great place from which to watch the sunsets. A large TV on which to watch Wimbledon and comfy sofas. Our adult children all said it was the best house/gite we have ever been to and we've been to a lot! The house was very well maintained and the cleaning was impeccable. Thank You!

Our stay at Abbott Moss could not have been better. Beautiful location and house. Julia could not have been more helpful with any enquiries we had. We will return again, it will be a good place to book for a few days when we travel to Scotland. Tips for other travellers Lowther Castle was a lovely day out. We could not get enough of the walks along Hadrian's wall and the museum's.

Michael, Ixworth

We thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Whole family really loved this beautiful house and peaceful surroundings. We will definitely return and highly recommend!

We were lucky enough to have booked Abbott Moss for our early Spring holiday. Such a beautiful house in a wonderful location. The exceptional furnishings and carefully chose art made it feel like home away from home. Tamar and Julia were fantastic and communications were clear. We will definitely return. Book it - it really is magical and you won't regret it!

Peter, Harrogate

This was our second stay at Abbott Moss and it already feels like the home-from-home to which we hope to return each year. Last time it was summer and we enjoyed eating outside, and looking at the lake. This time in the rainy and cold weather we were able to enjoy the log stove and the warm living room playing board games with the kids and watching movies. It was such a happy and peaceful time. The beds were as clean and inviting as always, and the CAKE which welcomed us was sublime - THANK YOU to Julia, the lovely housekeeper, for this treat. We will definitely be back! xxxxx

Kate, Wassenaar

Abbott Moss was a lovely place to stay with our family, it felt like a home when we walked in. Lovely location, great to sit out with a drink and watch the sun go down over the lake with it's wildlife. Well equipped kitchen with quality appliances and equipment, just read up on Aga cooking before you go as it was new to us, although there is an electric cooker and oven as well. Location is good for NW Lakes and Hadrian's Wall without being in a busy area, good amenities nearby.

Chris, West Oxfordshire

We had a gorgeous stay at Abbott Moss. The photos don't do justice to the location and beauty of the house - both inside and out. Driving down the private lane, our first glimpse of the house at the side of the lake was magical. It is remote and peaceful and yet no distance to the Northern Lakes. We enjoyed the wood burning stove and the addition of free logs was a bonus. Julia's lemon drizzle cake was a wonderful surprise. Everything has been thought out and we felt incredibly lucky to have stayed there. Book it - you won't regret it.

Kate, Silsden

We loved Abbott Moss - opening the curtains each morning to the views across the lake, walks from the doorstep, glorious seclusion, watching the wildlife - the house was simply exceptional. It has been restored beautifully with a kitchen that was a joy to cook in, with a lovely aga for cooking and warmth, spacious sitting room with huge comfy sofas, bedrooms with the comfiest beds we have ever slept in and great views from every angle. I can't recommend this house highly enough. We rarely go to the same property twice but we have already booked another stay.

Fiona, Newmarket

We were lucky enough to see in New Year 2022 from this wonderful house. To wake up on the first day of the year to those beautiful views across the lake was amazing. The change of colours on the lake and wild life are not to be missed. Everything about the house was well thought through to make our stay comfortable and if any small issue did arise it was resolved promptly. There are some great walks which start just outside the property -one of which takes you to a pub with good food. A lovely place to holiday and take a step away from work or the city.

Carol, Birmingham UK

Come to be inspired by the landscape and the serene hills, the rushing river Eden (much bigger than you might expect) and dramatic cloud formations. On warm days you'll be outdoors by the water, perhaps with a barbecue, on colder ones you can make yourself comfortable inside by the Aga or the fire in the sitting room with a book. This is a lovely light, warm house.
