The Experience

Welcome to your own wing of this pretty Lakeland house with sunny garden. You have a private entrance to the ground floor: a single space, uncluttered, toasty warm and utterly soothing.  At one end, a sparkling white kitchen occupies a corner, right next to a demure dining area with room for four. A basket of food essentials – complete with a bottle of wine to take the edge off – sets the tone for your stay.  The living room occupies the rest of the space – squashy sofas, decent lighting for reading and a big screen for flopping in front of after a hard day of walking. Nip up the stairs and you’re straight into the large bedroom, decked out with down pillows and duvet, pale wood furniture and pretty floor length curtains to keep out any chill. The bathroom is a gem – an ultra modern bath and walk in shower, all tiled in gleaming marble and with underfloor heating. Friendly owners Steve and Louise live in the main house with their dear little Cockapoo Daisy – they’re there if you need them, but happy to leave you to your own devices. Despite the peace and quiet, you’re only a brief stroll from Windermere and busy Bowness.

Absolutely stupendous accommodation allied with marvellous hosts. Spacious, well-equipped and immensely comfortable. We have recently had a couple of days in the New Forest and i’m afraid that Ada’s Retreat made a perfectly good hostelry seem second rate. Louise and Stephen really have set the bar too high.

My wife and I had 5 nights at Ada's retreat but how we wish it could of been longer. The accommodation is absolutely stunning and in a great location. The accommodation is really well equipped and everywhere is spotless. The bedroom and bed are both huge. It is the perfect place to get a good nights sleep after a long day on the fells. The owners are very friendly and more than happy to give advice on where to go and things to do. We are already planning our next visit to Ada's Retreart.

Look no further for a place to stay in this area. From the pre arrival planning help to the lovely accomodations, Louise and Stephen have created a magical experience. The location is great for driving to so many wonderful sites , for just walking into town to have a glass of wine at a local place overlooking the lake at sunset or for taking a lake cruise. Relaxing on the patio overlooking a beautiful gardens is a perfect way to end a day of touring . Everything about Ada’s Retreat is so comfortable and welcoming ; I think that I could live here .

Ada’s is by far the best self contained accommodation we’ve had the pleasure to stay in - spotlessly clean, well equipped, spacious and comfortable. It has been furnished to a very high standard and has a lovely homely feel about it. A fabulous welcome basket left by the owners for our arrival was a treat! Whilst within easy walking distance of the centre of Bowness, the house itself is in a peaceful location. We really can’t recommend Ada’s highly enough. Treat yourself to a stay here - we did!

Angela, Liverpool

Ada's retreat is just so comfortable and in such a good location as all the facilties of Bowness are within walking distance. Louise is a great host and both she and Stephen take a lot of care to ensure that your stay is great, whilst ensuring your privacy. Best Welcome basket ever! There are a number of historic houses and places to visit nearby as well as oodles of walks if that is your fancy. We would highly recommend staying here to explore the Lake District.

My wife and I have just returned to Sydney following a 4 1/2 week road trip around the UK. We had planned to stay in Bowness-on-Windermere for 5 nights and spent a lot of time trying to find good accommodation within walking distance of the village, restaurants and lake cruises etc. while having car parking. Ada’s Retreat satisfied all our requirements and exceeded our expectations. It was quiet, spacious and beautifully appointed. We highly recommend it for short and not-so-short stays.

What an absolute gem of a find! Beautiful, tasteful and immaculate with so much space , this cottage was everything we could have wished for and more. Louise and Stephen were the perfect hosts and made us feel so welcome and at home. In other self-catering places there are usually a couple of things that niggle, but at Ada's Retreat there was genuinely nothing we would change! The setting and beautiful sunny garden makes it feel like you are in the middle of nowhere and yet 2 mins walk down the road, you are in the middle of lovely lively Bowness. We will certainly be back!

Ada's House is just delightful. It is bright and beautifully appointed...and really spacious. Location was wonderful, a little oasis just 5 minutes from all the restaurants, cafes and shops in Bowness. We stayed a week and loved being there. Louise is a wonderful host, with lots of maps and great recommendations for the best walks. Very thoughtful and even baked us with some home-baked bread. We would highly recommend staying here to explore the Lake District.

Ursula, Sydney

What a beautiful sanctuary for a truly relaxing week in the Lake District. Our hosts Louise and Steve were so welcoming from the very start and had plenty of suggestions of walks for us to enjoy. Ada’s Retreat is very comfortable with everything thought of for a very special week. The house is spacious and clean with lots of thought gone into providing a luxurious but homely environment. Would thoroughly recommend.

Denise, Epsom

We had a lovely week at Ada's exploring the local area with lots of excellent tips and suggestions from our friendly and helpful hosts. The accommodation itself was perfect; beautifully decorated, spotlessly clean, spacious and very comfortable; lovely big bed, a sofa each and a gorgeous garden! The location was ideal with lots of places to visit nearby and shops, bars and restaurants a short walk away. Everything had been catered for meaning we were able to eat in a couple of times and relax in the evenings after our days out and about. Would definitely recommend a stay here!

Kate, Maidstone

We had a great time at Adas retreat. The accommodation is part of a large lakeland house just a short walk from Bowness. It is very private and has a lovely garden. The place itself is a real treat beautifully fitted out with plenty of room. The huge comfy bed and the modern bathroom are a real bonus.Downstairs you have everything you could possibly need from a modern fitted kichen to a large comfortable lounge. If we are in the Bowness area we would only stay at Adas lovely retreat. Louise was very friendly and helpful and the info on walks and local places to visit was brilliant.

We're on holiday in Wales now (September) and started reminiscing about the lovely time we had at Ada's (in April!). We meant to leave a review but realised we hadn't. It is a fantastic base for exploring the Lake District. The accommodation has everything you could possibly want, including lovely things in the welcome basket, and several books suggesting walks. It's a beautiful, relaxing place to stay. I would definitely recommend it.

Caroline, Chiddingfold

As seasoned self caterers this place is by far and above the best we have stayed in. We were made to feel so welcome by Steve and Louise and nothing was too much trouble. Everywhere was absolutely spotless and the kitchen was extremely well equipped - they had thought of everything we might need and the ‘welcome’ basket was full of yummy treats like chocolates and home made jam. The bed was so comfy and the down duvet and pillows felt really luxurious. We just didn’t want to leave, but we arrived home feeling rested and reinvigorated! Thank you again Steve and Louise, we will be returning! xx

Alison, Wigan

The Annexe and the location were brilliant. We were such a short walk from the Lake and the centre of Bowness and the apartment has been done really nicely. Louise was a very welcoming host who went out of her way at to make our trip more enjoyable - she also has great knowledge of the area and wrote us instructions on where to walk, have lunch etc. The kitchen is very well equipped and so we were able to cook most nights, and a cosy living rooms for watching films and relaxing after a long day hiking. Great value, would recommend it 100%.

Joe, London

We had an AMAZING stay in Ada's Retreat! It was warm, welcoming and beautifully decorated. The bed and sofas were really comfy and the kitchen had all the equipment you could possibly need if you wanted to stay in and cook, which we did as we enjoyed the place so much. The main purpose of our stay was for walking, and there are lots of great walks around here. Louise and Steve were so helpful and gave us great recommendations, a warm welcome and amazing tips as well as a lovely welcome basket with the essentials (coffee, milk, bread!) 10/10 absolutely perfect holiday. Hope to come back soon!
