The Experience

Meander through glorious mountains, becks and tarns to a conservation village and an artistic barn conversion. Set in a courtyard, your section of this former threshing barn has been brilliantly transformed by the owner, a local architect. Nuggets of history remain – exposed stones, old oak lintels polished to a rich hue – but the finishes ooze style, from the Starck fittings and the home cinema to the local art on the walls.

Cooking in the sleek kitchen is a treat and you can spill out to eat in the courtyard on sunny days. A spiral staircase of polished oak railway sleepers and stainless steel takes you up to the first floor, past the bathroom with its freestanding bath, to the living room with a cylindrical wood-burner and a window seat for inspiring mountain and lake views. The galleried bedroom is above, under a vaulted green oak roof.

Stride the hills, immerse yourselves in nature… step up to the terraced garden to soak up the afternoon’s rays on your return.

Reviews

This lovely cottage draws us back year after year. Nestling in a small hamlet with a variety of walks from the door, cosy and superbly well equipped this beautiful barn conversion is the perfect base to return to after a long day on the fells.

Ros, Axbridge

We had a fantastic winter week in Hart Barn. Being right by the mountains and valleys, it was easy to get out and make good use of the shorter days. It was great then, to come back, get the log fire burning quickly and relax and have a leisurely, cosy evening. The cottage is really well equipped and comfortable and Helen and Richard go out of their way to ensure all is well and you're happy.

John, Bristol

We stay at Hart Barn yearly, and have done so for the last 6 years or so, and will continue to do so. The Barn itself is set in an idyllic location; and is every bit as beautiful as it is online, but better. The hosts have spent so much time, love and care in ensuring every visit feels like your first. The attention to detail and unique touches in every room are just perfect, not only cosy and homely but well thought through so all you really need to pack are your clothes! It truly is a heavenly home from home in the mountains.

Amanda, London

Beautiful cottage, location and experience! The visit exceeded our expectations. We will there again next year! Both Helen and Richard have an eye for detail.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're tucked away in the southern end of the Patterdale valley in the unspoilt village of Hartsop. The village has great charm and a fascinating history. Many buildings are listed and it has a real ‘away from it all’ feel. The walking is superb and you'll spot much wildlife - the bird feeders are always busy and red deer can be spied on the fells all around. The nearest pub is just a mile away and there are shops in Patterdale, three miles.

Local points of interest from Helen Griffiths

  • In the heart of the Lake District National Park, the walking routes from the doorstep are sublime and wild swimming spots make this tucked away hamlet the perfect spot in high summer. No crowds and the high fells are often quieter in the peak months.
  • The barn showcases local contemporary arts and crafts from original paintings, ceramics, furniture and handmade glass. Fancy making something to take home? We can help find courses from creative cookery to willow weaving to accompany your stay
  • Honeymoon heaven - extras such as champagne, hampers and handmade chocolates can be included, as well as advice on where to go for a special meal and or organise a spa day - we know a great place which offers an exclusive couples retreat - just ask.
  • You can order dairy items for arrival and during your stay. Prefer to eat out? We can provide suggestions. Just a 15- min drive to Ambleside which has a wealth of excellent eateries. Two Michelin star restaurants within 25-min drive
  • Why use the car? A myriad of walks on the doorstep with loads of walking guides provided - plus we can help with arrangements and offer an exclusive to Sawdays, £25 discount if choosing to stay and be car free.
  • Real 5 star extras: Piles of fluffy White Company towels, handmade toiletries, chilled organic prosecco and a homemade cake on arrival, superfast fibre broadband, 4G EE mobile reception (only), Sky Q package with home cinema sound system and much more!

Introducing

Helen Griffiths

Hart Barn was designed by Richard who is an architect but also undertook much of the building work. Helen, formerly a marketing professional in London, provides the interior flare (and a few headaches for Richard) and is always on the look-out for new artists and designers who can contribute something to the properties. Richard and Helen are passionate about the Lakes and love discovering new places to visit and, as keen fell walkers, foodies and lovers of cake, they are happy to help plan your trips.
