The Experience

There’s nothing stuffy about this rambling old house on a hillside bang in the middle of the Lake District. A friendly informality pervades the place, so everyone will feel completely at home, from families with young ones to lone walkers.

You can drink and snack in the cosy and stylish Poet’s Bar, once the old library. Light lunches, locally-made cakes, as well as craft ales and lagers brewed just down the road in Fell, Bowness and Grasmere are served. Simon and his friendly staff look after you well.

While the kids run wild in the woodland playground, relax in the sitting room by the fire, drink in those outstanding views, and tell yourself you’re going to go for a bracing walk soon. Wordsworth found this house an inspiring place to stay, and so will you.

Location

The neighbourhood

It’s an easy amble to bustling Grasmere, famous for gingerbread and of course, daffodil-obsessed Wordsworth. But with 30 acres of mature gardens and woodlands surrounding the hotel, there’s more than enough to keep everyone busy here. Head upwards along Wainwright pathways through the woods to climb Helm Crag, Easedale or Silver Howe. If you miss the bright lights, Ambleside is a 15-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Simon Wright

  • Lancrigg is steeped in history. There have been many famous owners and guests over the years including naturalist Sir John Richardson, William and Dorothy Wordsworth and Charles Darwin (who gifted some of the tree specimens).
  • William and Dorothy Wordsworth were such regular visitors to Lancrigg that Dorothy used to sit and write up Williams notes in the gardens. William wrote a sonnet, 'Mark the concentrated hazels that enclose', about the Hazel trees in the woodland.
  • The silence at Lancrigg provides an undisturbed area for great wildlife. Red squirrels, Roe deer, Nuthatch and Tree Creepers are common sights. There are also colourful fungi and wild flowers to see around the grounds and higher on the fells.
  • There are regular antique, arts and crafts fairs in Grasmere. Nearby, Allen Bank is also a fantastic place to take children of all ages who are tired of fell walking! For a culinary experience, our restaurant has recently gained an AA Rosette.
  • Easedale Tarn is close by for wild swimming, with stunning views of the waterfall. Helm Crag is a peak with outstanding wide views of the surrounding fells. Children also like the idea of seeing 'The Lion and the Lamb' at the top.
  • Our hidden playground has been designed to let children use their imagination. From dam building in the stream to hide and seek with a zip wire base, there is plenty to keep them occupied. More elements are being introduced all the time.

Introducing

Simon Wright

Originally a boy from the Borders, Simon travelled the world as a sound engineer until his hearing was affected. Undaunted, he started again, and now splits his time between the hotel and his job as a successful landscape designer in London. His keen eye and artistic flair are evident inside and outside Lancrigg as he gradually transforms the house and gardens. He has plans for a woodland swimming pool and perhaps outdoor sleeping pods too!
