Lapwings Barn

Kendal, Cumbria
Bed & Breakfast

Charming retreat for 2 or 4 in beautiful Cumbrian countryside. Pleasantly rustic rooms, delicious locally sourced breakfasts, great walks

2 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

In the back of most-beautiful-beyond, down narrow lanes, this converted barn is a gorgeous retreat for two – or four. Delightful generous Gillian and Rick give you privacy and an upstairs sitting room with log stove, sofa and a balcony with views. Bedrooms downstairs (separate entrances) are pleasingly rustic with beams and modern stone-tiled bathrooms. Breakfast is delivered: sausages and bacon from their Saddlebacks, eggs from their hens, superb homemade bread and marmalade. Stroll along lowland tracks, watch curlews and lapwings, puff to the top of Whinfell. Ambleside and Beatrix Potter’s house are near. One of the best.

A truly hyggelig B&B that captures the best of both worlds, the space of a little self-catering cottage with a delicious breakfast delivered to your door in the morning and a great host to answer any questions. After a day of walking, it was lovely to return to a glowing fire and homemade cake . Surrounded by beautiful Cumbrian countryside with Kendal a 15 minute drive away Lapwings is perfectly situated for exploring.

We stayed with our two year old boy at the barn and had a fantastic time. Our kid was allowed to feed the chicken, play with the old tractor and explore the farm and all surroundings. The room was cosy and breakfast great, in particular the home made bread. We would love to come again

Great place, lovely hospitality. Will come back again.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Rick & Gillian Rodriguez

  • Some people visit us because whilst they are 10 minutes from everything in Kendal, when sitting out on the balcony of Lapwings or the terrace of Curlew Quarters you can often hear complete silence. Lapwings, Curlews and agricultural activities permitting
  • The Brewery Arts Centre 10 minutes away offers live music, theater, cinema and art exhibitions as well as food and a bar within such a creative environment. Abbot Hall offers Kendal's art heritage and Blackwell, the arts and crafts house is nearby too.
  • Take a packed lunch, walk from here on the fells/single track lanes, and leave your car parked here for the day. Stare back at sheep and see if you can bound like a lamb.
  • Dip into Ambleside, Windermere or Bowness to see the busy zones, hire a bike to go over the ferry on foot to Beatrix Potters' house at Sawrey, buy your souvenirs then come back to relax with peace. and cake!
  • For a circular day, drive up to Pooley Bridge take a boat on Ulswater, take a walk to Aira Force waterfall, then find food before or after you experience the heights of Kirkstone pass on the way to Windermere.
  • Kendal 'market is held every Saturday where we sell a large variety of breads made by Rick.
