A smiley team welcome you to this smartly refurbished 17th century coaching inn. The majority of their fruit, vegetables and herbs are grown less than five miles away in the kitchen garden at Netherby Hall. Meat and fish are all sourced locally and you can finish with head chef Christopher’s signature dish – arctic roll with pistachio and green tea sorbet.
Six bedrooms are upstairs and there are three ground-floor dog-friendly ones in the new wing. Each named after a border reiver family, they’re decked out in relaxed country style, with warm colours and velvet or woollen throws. Bathrooms (all en suite) have deep tubs and rainfall showers.
Wake to a hearty breakfast of whisky porridge, poached eggs, Cumberland sausage and black pudding; fill your day walking or cycling in the most remote countryside with hardly any cars and stunning views. Visit Hadrian’s Wall (17 miles) or Kielder Water (30 miles) for dark skies. Sip a dram back here in front of the crackling fire, or in the garden on balmy evenings.
