The Eltermere Inn

Ambleside, Cumbria

A country-house inn that sits above the water encircled by the Langdale peaks - beautiful bedrooms, tasty food and open fires wait

12 rooms

Rooms sleep 2

This gorgeous Lakeland inn, once a Georgian farmhouse, seems lost to the world, yet it’s only a couple of miles from Grasmere. In summer you sit in the peaceful garden with local sheep for company and dig into afternoon tea; in winter you order a pint at the bar, then roast away in front of the fire. You’re in an unblemished village that stands back from the water in the shade of forested hills. Inside, beautiful interiors are part country house, part village inn. There’s a grand piano in the dining room, ancient slate floors in the bar, then big sofas and lovely art in the airy sitting room. Upstairs, stylish rooms have warm colours, local wool carpets, big beds and Mulberry fabrics. Some have padded window seats, others are open to the eaves, all have excellent bathrooms; those at the front have views of lake and mountain. Downstairs, you find the sort of food you hanker for after a day in the hills, perhaps bouillabaisse, steak and kidney pie, banana gingerbread with toffee sauce. Walks start from the front door, there’s croquet on the lawn, they even grow their own vegetables.

We spent three wonderful nights at Eltermere, enjoying the Lakes district walks during the days. The weather was wonderful, and the walking exhilarating, so our appetite for dinner in their beautiful dining room was enthusiastic. Excellent rooms, beautiful gardens, and welcoming interesting hosts. We would certainly visit again.

We stayed at the Eltermere Inn from 2 to 5 October. The hotel and its location are stunning. We were in the Robin Ghyll, a lovely room in a converted barn attached to the main building - beautifully decorated and furnished with views towards the lake. We had dinner in the hotel each night - the food was excellent. Breakfast was equally good, including the Full English. The service is second to none. All the staff are friendly and efficient - nothing is too much trouble for them, especially Ben and Evie. It's worth every penny to stay here simply for the service. We will definitely be back.
