The Experience

The Mount is let as a B&B during school time and a self-catering home during the school holidays. It’s a great place for couples and families, with activities galore nearby and a warm, friendly space to return to. Walk – in your wet suit – to the marina and have a sailing lesson, paddle in a kayak or go for a spin on the water in the Keswick Launch.

Breakfast comes with Clive’s delicious bread, locally cured bacon and conserves produced by a friend who’s a dab hand at jam-setting; your dog will be perky – he gets a sausage too. You can eat outside in the award-winning garden when it’s sunny.

There are five bedrooms to choose from – they all have those wake-up views. If you fancy sleeping out under the stars the shepherd’s hut for one is cosy with a wood-burner, sink and loo (hop back to your private shower in the house). You don’t have to get in the car for dinner – there is a pub in the village and many more in Keswick, a 20-minute walk.

Reviews

We traveled to the Lake District for a week as a small group of 6 friends and a dog for the first time and we had such a wonderful time staying with Caroline and Clive. It started with the warm welcome on our first night, we arrived more than two hours after the scheduled time due to a significant train delay. And it then continued with personal care throughout our stay, with delicious breakfasts and good recommendations for our daily planning. It was so gratifying for us to experience the difference between a "rental business" and the personal hospitality we enjoyed there.

It was a wonderful stay at the Mount. I'm not usually too bothered by hotels but thought your house was truly, truly lovely. The décor, the thought that had gone into everything. I loved all the art work too and the mix of pictures of Brighton. Absolutely first class. The breakfast and cake was fabulous too. Oh and that kettle! Brilliant. I must say, you both made me feel so well come and were so helpful and kind with information and suggestions and for allowing my late check out. Thank you so much for making my stay in the lakes magical.

We had a fantastic short break at The Mount Guest House - Caroline and Clive were very welcoming and accommodating from point of contact and throughout our stay ensuring all our needs with our 2 springer spaniels - Ted and Colin were met at all times. We had a lovely comfortable room overlooking the lake - so peaceful to. We loved the extras of locally sourced products, home made biscuits, cake and the dogs loved their breakfast sausages too. A wooftastic stay .Thank you .Lisa, Julian, Ted and Colin

We really enjoyed our stay at The Mount and will be recommending it to all our friends! It is a beautiful house situated in a very convenient location. Caroline and Clive are truly excellent hosts with nothing too much trouble. The homemade bread, cakes biscuits and jam add to the homely experience and the freshly cooked breakfast is superb. Even Piper(our springer) had a sausage for breakfast.

Our Fantastic Fifth Stay at the fabulous Mount with the world's finest hosts Caroline and Clive. Thanks so much for another brilliant holiday, delicious breakfasts, lovely room with ensuite ,their knowledge of the area and where to walk and visit was superb. Thanks for the sausages for our dog Luca , he loved them. The house is beautiful and we really liked the newly decorated room with the gorgeous wallpaper and superb view over their delightful garden! I really like that they use local products in the ensuite and have their stunning artwork throughout the house. Keep up the brilliant work!

Arrive to a warm reception from Clive, pot of tea and a piece of cake in the garden too!! I stayed in the shepherd hut for two nights as a solo traveller with two dogs, which was just as it looked it the pictures. It was clean, compact, cozy and comfortable and the private bathroom in the main guest house was lovely. The vegetarian cooked breakfast was a real treat especially as the weather was ideal to enjoy having it in the garden surrounded by flowers and bird song. The location was perfect and the host were amazing, can't praise them enough. Only hope it won't be long till my next visit.

We thoroughly our 4-night stay at The Mount. Our hosts, Caroline & Clive, were v friendly + attentive throughout our stay. We especially liked the period charm of this B&B, with its lovely furniture, decor, paintings, etc, which all made for a much appreciated change from the usual bland character of so many modern establishments. The B&B is calm + peaceful, with no music or radio playing in the background. The breakfasts were tasty + nicely presented, with a focus on being locally + ethically sourced. All in all, a superb base for exploring N Cumbria + for those who appreciate peace + quiet

Simply the best! Easily one of the best B&B's in the country. Superb welcome from Caroline and Clive make you feel genuinely at home very quickly. Very comfortable bedroom, breakfast out of this world in their beautiful garden. Everything was perfect. Close enough to stroll into Keswick but far enough away for peace. Top of our list for future breaks.

I had the pleasure of staying in the shepherds hut at The Mount, which was like a tiny slice of heaven in the Lakes. Clive gave me the warmest of welcomes, offering me tea and cake before the keys! While Caroline was only too happy to share her favourite open water swim spots with me when I asked. The hut was a real delight, stocked with everything from a fab selection of teas, to hot water bottles and extra blankets. I had the use of my own exclusive bathroom in the main house, which was perfect- great shower, a selection of soap and shampoo and big fluffy towels. I can't wait to visit again

Laura

Fabulous stay - so welcoming, comfortable, lovely hosts! Wouldn't stay anywhere else!

Anna, Preston

A very comfortable stay in such a friendly B&B with super breakfasts. Excellent bacon! Caroline and Clive know the area well and can show you the best places to go for avoiding crowds.

Nicola, Bristol

Probably the best b&b we have ever visited. Caroline and Clive are superb hosts and the location is ideal for exploring the northern lakes. We have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

Alastair

We stayed here very recently and the Mount is in a beautiful location. The room we had was really lovely & great view of the lake. Breakfast was amazing, very filling and good choice. Clive and Caroline are very good hosts, very helpful regarding local information. We would definitely look to stay again!

We had a very enjoyable weekend stay and would highly recommend The Mount B and B. Clive and Caroline are the perfect, friendly hosts. We were shown to our very comfortable and well-appointed room on our arrival and welcomed with tea and delicious cake in the lounge. The views from our bedroom of both the lake and mountains were amazing, and a stunning location in the village of Portinscale yet close to Keswick with its range of restaurants. Every need had been thought of, e.g. a small fridge outside our bedroom with fresh milk. The breakfasts were delicious - we'll definitely be back!

Sarah

Caroline and Clive are brilliant hosts with lots of top tips about activities and eating out. The Mount is a beautiful place to stay and the room was very spacious, our Golden Retriever loved it there, all the fuss and treats! The breakfasts were top notch and really delicious, especially the bacon and creamy mushrooms. Location is ideal, easy walk into Keswick, easy walk to Derwentwater and Catbells. Easy drive to Buttermere/Grasmere/rest of lakes. We will be going back again in the future and can't wait to return.

Olivia

We have just returned from our second stay at The Mount and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. Caroline and Clive really are the perfect hosts. Incredibly welcoming and friendly, have a great knowledge of the area and things to do, and provide a fantastic breakfast! The Mount is a great location, lots of walks straight from the guest house and not too far from Keswick should you need to visit. I really can’t recommend The Mount enough (we never stay in the same location twice and are already planning a third visit!)

Paula, Cambridge

We had a wonderful stay at the Mount Guest House. Caroline and Clive were perfect hosts and made us feel very welcome. From the moment we arrived with home made cake and tea which was delicious. Our hosts were so knowledgeable about the area that they gave us lots of suggestions for our brief stay in Keswick. Next time we must stay longer to take advantage of more walking. The bedroom was warm comfortable and quiet.

Anne

The time I spent at the Mount was so perfect that I have actually planned to return again! Clive and Caroline were awesome hosts, very warm and welcoming with so many wonderful tips of great places to do and see around the area. The house and rooms were very clean and so welcoming and comfortable. Oh and just thinking about the homemade bread they bake makes me want to go back now! Definitely a five-star rating for me and a must experience to repeat….can’t wait to go back!

Adina, Seattle

We hired the whole house as self catering for a family ‘significant’ birthday. It’s a brilliant space, plenty room to hang out and eat together. Good fun all coming round the table for breakfast. Lucky with the weather to enjoy sundowners in the charming outdoor area. Very well thought out with all that we needed and so much space so as not be on top of each other. The children loved all being together. Very comfy beds and lovely thoughtful touches in the rooms and around the house. Amazing views from the windows to such spectacular scenery! I could go on but have run out of characters...

R, Eastbourne

After driving from York to Keswick we had a fun and relaxing family time in Keswick. We enjoyed the kayaking and swimming in the nearby lake as well as going out for walks. But what made the big difference was staying at The Mount, comfortable beds, big living room, clean facilities, convenient parking and well located. We will be back!

Location

The neighbourhood

Set in the middle of lakeland village Portinscale, on the doorstep of Derwentwater. The marina is a five-minute walk - a great place for children to learn to sail and Clive sometimes helps out here. Keswick is a 20-minute walk for heaps of outdoor shops and you can have hearty food at The Fellpack cafe, open most of the day. It's a glorious walk Lingholm to see Peter Rabbit’s garden or go for a walk with alpacas.

Introducing

Caroline Howarth

Caroline, a social psychologist, and Clive, a chemistry academic, moved to the Lakes in 2016, leaving hectic Brighton/London lives. They’ve lived in many places (Fiji, Kenya, America to name a few...) but the whole family feel at home and inspired by this fantastic area. They love walking, cycling and wild swimming, finding great pubs and delicious local produce, and want to share the magic of the Lake District with you.
