The Experience

Settle into your big, airy bedroom then take a stroll round the Lowther Estate. Once you’ve worked up an appetite sit down for a supper of ‘super-posh’ pub grub; pretty much everything that passes through the kitchen is reared, foraged and grown on the estate’s farms. Head chef Anthony Amos dreams up satisfying menus using all this superb local produce.

With just six rooms you’re well looked after at this friendly inn. Start your day with a fell walkers breakfast: all the trimmings, porridge and veggie options too. Grab your swimmers for a dip in the public, outdoor pool next door (open in the summer) or it’s a ten-minute drive to Ullswater for watersports, boat trips and lakeside walks. Cyclists, wild swimmers and fell runners are spoilt for choice or have a go at fly fishing the river Lowther. Buzzy Penrith is a short drive.

Whatever you get up to during the day, you’ll be delighted to warm up in front of the wood-burner or prop up the smart bar with a nightcap.

Location

The neighbourhood

Penrith (15-minute drive) is the hub of the Eden Valley in the heart of Cumbria. It bustles with shops, cafés and restaurants and there's a train station if you plan to travel without a car. Ullswater is just four miles from the pub for watery fun. It's a 1.5 mile amble to Lowther Castle and Gardens; you can be busy here for a whole day exploring the ruins, gardens and activity playground.

Local points of interest from The Lowther Family

  • The Queen's Head Askham is situated in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, in the Eden Valley on the edge of the Lake District: an idyllic spot to visit.
  • Guests have access to a nearby 'Health Barn' offering a range or relaxation and therapeutic treatments, including a state of the art flotation tank, the only one of its kind in Cumbria.
  • The nearby sister hotel Askham Hall was the home of the Lowther family for over 200 years, after they moved from nearby Lowther castle in the 1930s. It is built up around a 12th-century Pele Tower. Guests can stroll around the gardens.
  • The Queen's Head is part of Ciel Hotels. Found on a family-owned ‘living’ estate, a collection of unique places to eat, drink and sleep on the edge of the Lake District.
  • The Askham area is a walker’s paradise, set above the River Lowther it is the perfect setting for a riverside walk, skimming stones or paddling with the children. If you are looking for spectacular scenery or something more challenging walk up Askham fell.
  • Lowther Castle is the original home of the Lowther family. Built at the turn of the 19th Century it is steeped in history. Extensive restoration work has been carried out in recent years and it is now one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cumbria

Introducing

The Lowther Family

The Lowther family own and run a trio of places to eat, drink and sleep in the Eden Valley, on the edge of the Lake District, called the Askham Collection. Charles, a committed custodian of the land, rears slow-grow breeds of beef, pork and lamb on the Lowther Estate that find their way onto the menu in each place. You're looked after by friendly, professional staff wherever you go.
