The Experience

You’re looked after beautifully by attentive staff: old school hospitality means your bags are carried, the morning papers ordered and you needn’t lift a finger. Ensconce yourself in the Garden Room conservatory for afternoon tea and soak up the views, cosy up in the sitting room with a good book, order an aperitif at the bar. Dinner is a smart affair in the award winning Gallery Restaurant – sparkling silverware, starched napkins, every plate a work of art – you may have to dress up. Much produce comes directly from the estate.

Stroll from the hotel to historic Chatsworth House: it’s a 20-minute meander through a kissing gate and along a bridle path, a rather magical way to arrive at this elegant house. Plenty to enjoy here with seasonal events and regular exhibitions. The award-winning Chatsworth Farm Shop is a good spot to stock up.

The 28 traditional bedrooms are big, light and divinely comfortable. Book a suite if you’re feeling grand.

Reviews

A well run hotel in a lovely setting on The Chatsworth Estate. Very friendly and helpful staff. The two dining rooms serve excellent food, mostly produce from The Estate. The local lamb was particularly good. The bedrooms are well appointed and newly decorated. We will definitely return.

Diane, Milton Keynes

Out the front door, through the kissing gate and in twenty minutes you'll find yourself at Chatsworth House. You're in the heart of the estate here - you can glimpse the house's rooftops through the trees from your bedroom. I loved this peaceful, relaxed small country hotel, with its traditional interiors, the lovely nothing's-too-much-trouble staff and delicious food.

Location

The neighbourhood

You're on the main road into bustling Baslow and, of course, you're in the Peak District National Park with walks from the door. There's a 190 mile boundary walk that runs round the entire park if you want to tackle some of that - stage 12 runs through Pilsley and Beeley. Don't miss out on afternoon tea at Chatsworth - it's a fancy affair in the stables.

Local points of interest from Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants Group

  • The Cavendish is owned by the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire and became part of the family around 1830, acquired from the Duke of Rutland (some say at the card table!).
  • Every bedroom has a magnificent view over Chatsworth Estate, and the House can be reached after a short (20 minute) walk from the front of the Hotel across the Estate.
  • If you don't fancy the strain of a walk, you can while away the afternoon with your favourite tipple with an equally good view from the Garden Room.
  • We have just launched our superb terrace, an outside extension to the Garden Room, a real sun trap!

Introducing

Devonshire Hotels and Restaurants Group

The current Duke is the 12th Duke of Devonshire. The family's heritage dates back to the mid-16th century and Chatsworth House has been their ancestral home since it was completed in 1549. He and the Duchess still live in one wing of the house. They are very involved with the running of the pub and hotel on the estate. You're looked after by friendly teams in each place.
