The Experience

Joseph Paxton, head gardener at Chatsworth and Crystal Palace designer, bought the house in the 1840s and landscaped the enchanting Victorian gardens. The Artertons have renovated this Georgian gem with huge care, filling it with antiques and retaining original features throughout: sash windows, shutters, ornate plaster, marble fireplaces. Find plenty of space – an elegant drawing room, a library/sitting room, an enormous beamed kitchen with doors onto the garden and a games room for children. Up the elegant curved staircase to charming, peaceful bedrooms with leafy views. Restoring the garden to its former glory is an exciting work in progress. The scheme is warm, autumnal colours with two of the oldest Ginkgo biloba trees in the country, giant redwood and beech, rhododendrons, scented Calycanthus with fragrant woody stems, herbaceous borders by the croquet lawn. Graceful stone steps lead to a balustraded terrace, woodland paths meander, water cascades. Set out for walks in the Peak District National Park, cycle trails, stately homes. It’s a magical place for family reunions.

Reviews

Lucy is fantastic with a warm, personal touch as well as providing detailed information about the property itself. There was plenty to entertain children and adults alike - the croquet in particular was a firm favourite with the teenage children (quite a feat considering there is also a games console!!). The rooms are beautiful and most of our time was spent in the large, open kitchen. We loved how the garden had many aspects to explore and enjoy, each with its own “feel”. We thoroughly relished every moment and are already thinking about a future visit!

We had an absolutely glorious stay at Darley House. Lucy communicated with us well before, during and after our stay and made the property as COVID secure as possible which have us great peace on mind after months in lockdown. The house was spacious and had modern touches that complimented perfectly its rich history and heritage. The gardens in particular were a great hit with adults and children alike. With walks on the doorstep and many attractions nearby, there was something for everyone. Would highly recommend.

There is something magical about Darley House that is hard to describe. A stunning building, yes, but also a feel about it that just makes one sigh with contentment. The gardens are obviously a key feature, but the atmosphere being there is truly something special. Lucy is a very attentive owner and clearly cares for the house and guests. It feels like an invitation to share in the experience of the house has been extended to you rather than a business transaction for a self catering let. Can't wait to return once more.

What a wonderful paradise this is to celebrate my 70th birthday! The children loved the fabulous gardens, as we all did. Fabulous welcome and dinner on Tuesday. This house is not only beautiful and comfortable, it has everything for all ages. Unforgettable!

Lesley, Grantham

An idyllic venue that needs to be seen to be believed. Spacious, uber-comfortable and grounds to rival most parks! To top it off Lucy, the owner, is great from booking through to (reluctantly) ending the stay.

What a lovely weekend we had at Darley House - thank you! It is evident how much time and effort you have put into restoring this gorgeous house and its gardens. An ideal spot for a celebratory gathering where people can walk, enjoy the gardens, play croquet (not very well!) and have fun. Charlie produced a fantastic meal for us and we all enjoyed the hot tub especially as the weather was good. The beds were very comfortable and everyone said how much they relaxed!

Spent 5 days a the very beautiful Darley House . Five Star in every way with Ritz Carlton quality bedrooms, elegant sitting and TV rooms and the most wonderful kitchen leading onto a lovely garden. The kitchen table easily seats 12/14 and perfect for leisurely breakfasts and really bouncy/chatty diiners. The garden is quite outstanding, with a large lawn for croquet and childrens games. A perfect location for your holiday in the Derbyshire Dales

We stayed at Darley House as a group of 10, and were blown away with this beautifully restored house. All the bedrooms were stunning along with ensures of the highest spec. But the kitchen diner has to be the star turn. The size and facilities meant we could all comfortably spread out, cook, talk, watch TV. There are books to read, table tennis or a comfortable lounge in which to relax. The grounds were wonderful in Autumn, and I am sure would be equally lovely for a summer BBQ. All in all, a great time was had by all and we can highly recommend to a discerning group of friends or families.

We had a fantastic stay at Darley House as a family group to celebrate a 50th Birthday. It was a privilege to share such a magnificent home that has clearly been lovingly restored and provides opulence yet practicality for a group of adults and younger children. The vaulted kitchen was a fantastic space to eat, cook, share social time and watch the family entertainment laid on after our evening birthday meal. All of the adults were treated to an oversize en suite bathroom, luxurious beds and bedding was thoughtfully provided. And the grand games room was a real hit! Overall... perfect!

We had a lovely few days staying at Darley House. The house and garden are stunning; peaceful and luxurious so that one doesn't want to leave! However there is so much to do in the surrounding area; great places to walk, shop or visit.

What a treat. I had a wonderful few days at Darley house with a group of friends in December. The house was a perfect setting for us to relax and charge our batteries ahead of the run up to Christmas. It has been sympathetically restored &tastefully decorated throughout with so much space to enjoy. It would be very easy to spend a whole weekend not leaving the house but we did venture out. There are so many places to explore in the surrounding area - historical buildings, beautiful gardens, pretty little towns and villages, great places to eat and fabulous countryside to walk off the excesses.

Ali

Had a fabulous stay in this amazing house which has been refurbished to a really high standard. Beautiful bedrooms and bathrooms to die for - drench showers & free-standing baths - very luxurious and perfect for relaxing after long walks. Spent a lot of our time in the enormous kitchen / dining area with it's double doors open to the large garden - a perfect set up. Plenty to do in the area too - we had our two teenage boys with us along with another family and spent our time exploring the peak district on foot and bike, playing golf and visiting Chatsworth etc. You won't be disappointed!
