Horsleygate Hall

Holmesfield, Derbyshire

In fabulous, award-winning gardens in the gorgeous Peak District, three rustic retreats with bucolic views

3 bedrooms

Sleeps 6

In the stunning Cordwell Valley find three barn conversions surrounding a lovely old farmhouse. ‘Orchard’, a sweet little bolthole for two, has a Rayburn and a romantic mezzanine bedroom lit by a chandelier; ‘Gin’ is slightly bigger, with a mural and a neat, modern kitchen. The apartment, adjacent to the hall, is light and airy, with a bird’s-eye-view of the pretty courtyard below. Stock up your wood-burner with logs and settle into the rural tranquility… Hearty, home-cooked meals can be delivered to your door by Melanie. Outside find 3 south-facing acres of gorgeous gardens with different ‘rooms’: an orchard with ancient apple trees, a Victorian greenhouse with grape vine and fig tree, a fecund kitchen garden (you can buy produce), a cobbled terrace overlooking the formal garden with its year-round interest, Alpine slopes, a pond surrounded by Gunnera and an Oriental garden tucked out of the way. Plenty of seating throughout and pagodas for shelter encourage guests to linger, there are rare trees to spot, wildlife and walks along the side of the valley straight from the garden. Art work is being added, it’s picture perfect for weddings – Melanie says “It gives joy to the wanderer and peace to the trouble-minded”. Lovely.

  • Literary giants walked this countryside - W.B.Yeats, HG Wells, George Barnard Shaw, John Galsworthy, E.M.Forster, Olive Shreiner (novelist) and many others to the area, courtesy of Edward Carpenter who lived less than a minute away from Horsleygate Hall.
