A stroll from one of the prettiest villages in the High Peaks is a stunning stone house with sensational views. Step in to find beams, flagstones, fireplaces and leaded windows dating from 1620, and an extremely comfortable country-house décor. Rugs adorn floors, sofas are squishy, there are oils on the walls and the dining room is a stunner, with an oak Welsh dresser against dark red walls and a candelabra above a long antique table. Cooks will love the country-cosy kitchen, but if they fancy a night off, there are pubs, restaurants and cafés in Castleton; Jenny, charming meeter and greeter, tells you all you need to know. Then it’s upstairs to three bedrooms, carpeted, peaceful and with fabulous views from those wonderful old windows. Extra guests can spill over into lovely Mushroom Cottage (no irritating WiFi), snug next door. In summer you’ll want to admire the cottage garden, or the view from the fabulous decked terrace. Skip down the lane to craft shops, galleries and village store, or up to Peveril Castle for breathtaking views; drive to historic Chatsworth House or quaint Bakewell; set off on a glorious walk straight from the door.

This was a wonderful place to stay, very well situated for peace and quiet yet within a 5 minute walk to the village for many great eating places as well as a fabulous bakery. Our stay coincided with Castleton's Ancient Garland ceremony (29 May), which was fascinating. Mullions itself is equipped to a very high standard and has everything you could possibly need. Its interior design is in keeping with the age of the house and is very homely. We particularly enjoyed being able to leave the car parked outside and walk or cycle most days for outings. There is a great range of activities available
