The Experience
The pillowy hills and quiet lanes of the Peak District National Park unravel before you – Dovedale to one side, Wetton Hill to the other – so artists, photographers, hikers and nature lovers will be happy. Serious cyclists will relish the inclines, though there are gentler routes – bikes can be brought and stored safely.Return to much comfort and style. A big bathtub in the bedroom, a wood-burner for cosy evenings in, an open plan kitchen for an easy supper prepared together, and a four-poster bed to climb into. The setting is splendid among the dry stone walls and tiny hamlets of Derbyshire – and it’s all yours to discover from the door. Or hop in the car and visit Chatsworth House – even better in June when the RHS Flower Show comes to visit.

My partner and I stayed for 4 nights at Winnow Nook during the summer. The accommodation itself was lovely, well equipped and it had everything we could want for our staycation. The location was excellent and offered a good base for exploring the beautiful local area, particularly for those who like walking. The hosts were responsive, helpful with recommendations for local area but not intrusive in the slightest. We would love to stay again and couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I had a wonderful time staying at the Winnow Barns. I had booked a few nights in the Winnows Nook which was perfect for a solo traveller. The Nook itself was just the right size with a lovely downstairs kitchen/living room and a large bedroom upstairs. The farmyard animals were very friendly and really added to the lovely feel of the place. The hosts were excellent and made me feel very welcome. The location is great as you are within walking distance of places such as Thor’s cave or the Dovedale stepping stones. It is also a great hub if you want to go cycling. A great place to stay.

Recently returned from a lovely few days in Winnow Nook. A lovely little cottage, with every thing you need for a relaxing break, run by very nice people. Large bedroom, with comfy bed and a bath! Good shower room. Soft towels. Very quiet location with good walks from the door. Andrea was lovely, very accommodating with our request for a Wednesday to Sunday stay and communication was very good. We had some Dovedale Brewering Co. beers delivered for our arrival which were excellent.

Andrea's flexibility was really appreciated (we booked lockdown week and had to reduce our stay but she couldn't have been more helpful and we'll definitely return). Lovely stay at a cosy, quiet retreat - an awesome place to recharge the batteries, put on the wood burner and kick back !

Hello Andrea We had a lovely time in your neck of the woods. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and furnished to a high standard. I especially enjoyed the bath after a day of walking! Despite the weather we managed a good walk every day and visited Chatsworth before driving back to London. We are determined to be back when next free to travel. I liked being able to support local businesses by ordering from Sauced.

What a wonderful stay at the Nook. This cosy welcoming barn has everything you need for a break away from it all. The four poster and claw foot bath in the bedroom are very romantic. Excellent walks in the area including Dovedale and Tissington. Very peaceful and quiet bolt hole enhanced by the variety of farm animals, loved the chickens who came straight to our front door. Andrea and John are excellent hosts and we will definitely be returning next year.

A really nice welcome from Andrea on arrival at Winnow Nook. We had booked for four nights wish we had booked for longer. A beautifully furnished cottage, it has warmth and cosyness and all very well equipped for a self catering stay. The four poster bed is so comfy too! The farm offers peace and quiet surrounded by outstanding beautiful countryside. Lovely to meet with John a little later in the day, both he and Andrea work hard to ensure a stay at Winnow Nook is just what the Dr. ordered. Thank you both for the thoughtful little extras we found on arrival, Mmmmm very nice.

Such a lovely stay in Winnow Nook - the peace and quiet was the perfect escape from city live. The accommodation was at once cosy and welcoming but also spotlessly clean. We loved the proximity to the animals and were made to feel so welcome by Andrea. The location was great and presented lots of opportunity to get out and explore. We’d definitely look to return. And sooner, rather than later!

My wife and I visited Winnow Nook for a week in June 2019. We had a great week. The accommodation was perfect for us with Andrea being an excellent host and able to answer all our queries. The bedroom was very large with a very comfortable mattress and roll top bath. The kitchen had all the essentials for self catering. We loved the area. Plenty of walking routes form the front door (Ilam, Dovedale, Milldale loop was our favourite) and I took my bike (secure bike storage) and was able to explore a little further. Hopefully we will return one day.

We had a wonderful, relaxing three days at Winnow Nook. Hidden away in the Derbyshire dales with fantastic walks on the doorstep, the perfect spot for getting some country air and cosy evenings in front of the wood-burner. Would recommend The George in Alstonefield and the village stores in Hartington

Location
The neighbourhood
Green as far as the eye can see. Absolutely idyllic, in the south of the Peak District National Park with rambles from the door. Two other self-catering cottages share the farm but it’s large enough not to feel overlooked. Visit the donkeys, or take a stroll to the Stepping Stones at Dovedale. The nearest pubs are a respectable 30-minute walk – The George at Alstonefield and The Royal Oak at Wetton – and there are shops six miles away in Ashbourne.
Local points of interest from Andrea Clarke
- Fabulous walks and cycling from the doorstep - suitable for all abilities. Exert yourself in Wolfscote Dale, admire views from the top of Thorpe Cloud or simply amble beside the river Dove in Milldale.
- Amble up the meadows just as the sun is about to set, perhaps take a picnic rug and a bottle of fizz ready to watch the sun set over the hills..... expect to see the noisy curlews heading for home and maybe a scurrying hare whizzing through the grass too!
- Take a morning walk from the doorstep across the fields. Take in the gorgeous views as you hike across Bunster and then descend to the famous Dovedale Stepping Stones. A little more walking over fields until you reach The Old Dog in time for lunch.
- After a busy week enjoy a relaxing evening in Hartington. Indulge in freshly cooked fish and chips by the olde worldly village pond and then maybe a drink in the cosy village pub - perfect end to a busy week!
- Check out the wildlife, curlews, skylarks, Red kite, Field fare, buzzards and kestrels are amongst a few of the regular visitors visible from the barn. not forgetting Dave, the resident barn owl.
- Cycle from the doorstep or for an easier ride choose one of the cycle trails close by. Routes along picturesque tracks with lovely cafes and pubs along the way. Bikes are available for hire.

Introducing
Andrea Clarke
Andrea and John Clarke took on the restoration job of a lifetime when they bought Damgate Farm fourteen years ago, swapping their professional careers in Sheffield for rare-breed sheep and converting dilapidated barns into three beautiful holiday lets. Now that their two daughters have flown the coop for university they’ve moved in a flock of rescued ex-battery hens and two donkeys, along with a host of other animals who call the farm home.
Winnow Nook made a great base for my wife and myself for the weekend. The cottage has lots of character and is very well equipped, offering everything we could want. The location is very tranquil and quaint, being a working farmyard. It was lovely to see the goats and to have hens coming to say hello to us when we had the door open. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful, before, during and after our stay. Andrea especially made sure our stay went well. We're already planning our next stay at Winnow Nook as there is lots to see and do in the very beautiful locality.
