A 14th-century inn, now a café/restaurant with rooms, that stands 50 metres from the water in the middle of this popular town

In 1620 the Mayflower stopped in Bayards Cove before sailing for America. It docked just outside this cool little inn, one of the oldest buildings in Dartmouth. But if its timber frames are ancient, then its jaunty interiors are the polar opposite with a warm contemporary feel that spreads itself far and wide. Once inside you realise you're in a small and quirky café/restaurant that does a good line in world wines and local ale. You also realise you've landed in heaven and soon you're planning an invasion of one of the bay windows, where you can sink into comfy armchairs and survey life inside and out. Interiors have warm colours, low beams, white stone walls and ancient wood everywhere. There are fairy lights, too, a bar weighted down by freshly baked cakes, and cool tunes afloat in the air. Cosy rooms have timber frames, padded bedheads, pretty fabrics, comfy beds. Most have compact shower rooms, but you won't mind for a minute; some have views of the water or wildly wonky floors. There's great food, perhaps crispy squid, moules frites, local ice creams. Dartmouth waits at the front door.

"A really beautiful location. We had the family room for 4 plus dog and found it just perfect. The building is so old and full of character but beautifully kept and very comfortable. Dinner and breakfast in the restaurant were of a high standard and our dog was allowed to sit below the table which was lovely. Staff were very friendly. Maciek gave us a great welcome. We really enjoyed our stay and woul have no hesitation in recommending Bayards Cove. "
