The
Experience
When the tide is in this ocean liner of a hotel is stranded on its own island. It’s romantic here and filled with history so allow yourself to be whisked back to the pre-war days of Agatha Christie and Noel Coward – both of whom were regular guests.Walk the coastline or spend idle days on the beach; there’s a private cove with turquoise waters – a natural salt water swimming pool. Return to the terrace at the Palm Court Bar for afternoon tea or a cocktail with glorious sea views. You’ll find a snooker room, table tennis and the library has TV.Dress up properly for three-course dinners in The Ballroom where there’s usually a pianist or house band, although you can head for The Captain’s Cabin or Ganges Restaurant if you prefer to be more casual. In the morning, tea or coffee is brought to your room – a nice old-fashioned touch.

Location
The neighbourhood
Burgh Island is just off Bigbury-on-Sea, a coastal village in South Devon. At high tide, you’ll have to get here by sea tractor, a quirky vehicle specially created for the hotel that makes for a memorable journey. The South West Coastal Path passes the far end of the island so you may see the odd rambler but otherwise there are no shops here, and only one pub - a former fisherman and smuggler's haunt called The Pilchard Inn, which has curry night on Fridays.
Local points of interest from Burgh Island
- Burgh Island Hotel has a magnificant location by the sea on its own 26 acre island. It is surrounded by a sandy beach and spectacular views over the sea.
- It was a favourite place for iconic people like Agatha Christie, who wrote 2 of her books in the Beach House room, Noel Coward and other pre-War luminaries.
- Beaches The hotel can be accessed in two ways: by hotel's own Land Rovers or unique Sea Tractor (when the tide is in).
- In season, there is a mermaid pool for natural swim lovers.
- Burgh Island Hotel is famous for it's Art Deco features and atmosphere.
