The Experience

You can’t get more southerly in Devon – if you did, you’d be in the briny! Keep the faith as you weave from the Blytonesque village of East Prawle with its village green, Piglet Stores, café and legendary pub – the Pig’s Nose Inn – to the edge of the world. The cottage is beloved and visited often by its owners – no sterile holiday home feel here –  instead, a warm and comfortable house with character.  A dramatically decorated snug with deep dark walls and white painted floorboards is the place to curl up in the evening while someone else gets on with the cooking, but it’s the seaside rooms that will particularly delight with their thrilling views and sounds. The attic bedroom is reached via a single room so makes a perfect family suite while the first floor bedroom with pretty wallpaper and vintage flower paintings has a charmingly old-fashioned feel. Outside, a delightful garden tumbles down to the coast path – in summer a mass of seaside-loving flowers. You could easily stay put but venture along the coast you must – either direction will lead to some of the loveliest beaches in Devon. Heaven.

The neighbourhood

Local points of interest from Mark & Sarah Bolton

  • The Pig’s Nose Inn - Just go there! Lively, eccentric and sometimes simply a place to just sit and be cosy by the fire, the pub is a one off - the antithesis of a smart gastro pub.
  • Piglet Café and Piglet Stores - The little café on the green opens from about Easter until the end of October and serves good breakfasts, cakes, lunches and cream teas. Occasionally open in the evenings too as the Piglet Bistro (bookings essential).
  • Salcombe - Walk to East Portlemouth from the cottage (1 hour) and then catch a ferry or drive for 10 minutes, park in the village and walk down the steps. A very pretty town beloved by yachties and Range Rover drivers.
  • The village shop sells everything you might need and many things you probably won’t such as a huge variety of pipe tobacco and snuff.
  • Maceley Cove - A 15 minute walk along the coast path is a little bit of the Med in the South Hams with gorgeous, turquoise waters and a sheltered, sandy cove. A picnic is a must and it’s a good spot for breakfast before anyone else arrives.
  • Overbeck’s On the Salcombe side. Catch the ferry across and walk past North and South Sands to this wonderful NT garden with sub-tropical planting set high on the cliffs on the way to Bolt Head.
