The Experience

Chill on the balcony (or wallow in the bath), and spot otters gliding in the stream below. With a distant hill to one side and a brook to the other, this lovely modern bolthole is a peace-seeker’s dream.

Richard and Sheila created Fingals 30 years ago. Barberry Brook is one of six characterful retreats, and the closest to the conservatory-housed pool. There’s masses of old-fashioned fun to be had, with grass tennis, table tennis and croquet. Meet the other guests over snooker, round the barbecue, or in the sauna. There are DVDs to borrow, a piano to play, and a sailing school down the lane.

Catch the ferry to Dartmouth; browse the shops in Totnes; swim at Blackpool Sands, a 25-minute drive. Have lunch at the Anchorstone Café or if you fancy a night out, set off for the Ferry Boat Inn. Both are walkable and worth every step.

Reviews

we stayed at Barberry Brook which was absolutely gorgeous. the bedroom space upstairs was filled with light and the sound of the brook just below as well as the birds chittering away. The bed linen was lovely and soft and the shower gels and soap smelled divine. we had everything we needed and the hosts. we're very nice and relaxed. the location is gorgeous and the site itself is bigger than expected. we would definitely recommend Fingals. Many people seem to recommend the Ferry Boat Inn as a pub to visit for food but we personally wouldn't recommend it. The view is stunning but the pub itself

This is a magical place, deserving of more than a couple of days of stay! I think we barely made the most of the facilities and the gorgeous surroundings so we will have to come back again!! Richard and Sheila were very relaxed and very welcoming - a charismatic couple! We loved our mini house which was filled with light & the wonderful sounds of the chatty birds and the brook. There was everything we needed and the bedding was gorgeous - very soft and luxurious! Thanks to the hosts - we'll be back! Janine & Darren. 10/10

What a delightful haven surrounded by birds singing & nature getting busy for Spring. Richard & Sheila gave us a very warm welcome and made us feel right at home. Richard knows all the walks around here so it’s worth tapping into his great knowledge of them. We had a lovely meal in the Malsters Arms Tuckenhay so can recommend it. We are off to NT property Coleton Fishacre today for a wonder round the gardens. So much to do, we’ll have to come back!! Thank you.

We have had the most delightful week here in this peaceful, elemental place, sound tracked by a babbling stream dancing outside the window. The days have been full of walking, the nights spent snuggled up on the sofa drinking tea, doing crosswords and – because it’s that time of year – watching Die Hard. The pool and sauna were Godsends too! Already planning the next visit.

You've got it all here - so much to do on the quirky Fingals site, a short walk from great cafes and pubs, the River Dart, and then a quick drive to the beach. Sit out on the balcony in the sun and watch the brook gently flow by (perhaps spotting an otter or 2), or if it's rainy do the same whilst having a soak in the tub. The perfect retreat for a couple - and anyone with green aspirations will love the eco credentials of the place and Sheila & Richard's green 'policy'.

Location

The neighbourhood

Step out of the door and Devon is yours: the Dart, the sea, the woods, and the high-hedged lanes. Hire boats and borrow bikes (note, steep hills!). The Post Office Stores at Dittisham is a 20-minute stroll; 10 minutes beyond is the river Dart, where you can catch the ferry to Dartmouth. Or take the foot-ferry - and walk up the hill to Agatha Christie’s house. Sharphan Vineyard (5 miles) does tours and tastings. Coleton Fishacre, a stunning Arts & Crafts house, is a 40-minute drive.

Local points of interest from Richard & Sheila Johnston

  • Painting courses in next door barns
  • Greenway (Agatha Christie) House short ferry accross river
  • Greenlane walks from front door and coastal walks a short distance away
  • Dartmouth a 20 min boat ride away on the Dart river
  • Dartington hall with literary festival and Summer music school 20 mins
  • Beaches coves and estuaries to swim in

Introducing

Richard & Sheila Johnston

Richard and Sheila, convivial and charismatic, created Fingals in the 1980s. Not only was it a legendary restaurant-hotel, uniquely relaxed and informal, it was far greener than most. The hotel has now closed, but Richard and Sheila still live in the old manor. Sheila keeps doves, and, helped by Jane, runs the cottages with a delightful laid-back charm.
