Fingals is groovy, a jumble of a place in a hidden valley in one of the loveliest parts of south Devon. It’s run with charm, humour and a dash of idiosyncrasy by Richard and Sheila. Each year, a little more accommodation is added onto the Queen Anne farmhouse. The one-bedroom Folly is one of the later twists, a mad-cap scheme to add colour and genius, with a cleverly conceived little ‘deck’ area where a boat has been laid to rest so that you can loll in dappled sunshine beside a brook. The Wisteria Suite can sleep up to four people – the two bedrooms open onto a balcony with tables where you can have your breakfast, and views over the garden and tennis court Walk down to the river or the pub, hire canoes, paddle, laze on the beach, a 20-minute drive. Fingals is generous, unusual, laid-back and great fun.
