The Experience

Take a room or two – or all five and arrange your own house party. The stage is set for you to design your stay: plenty of comfortably classy space downstairs with a separate dining room for ten. Upstairs five bedrooms smartly designed for the building’s cottagey old bones; two have space for a cot and Quail, the smallest, has the biggest shower room.

Ask Clare about having simple or seriously celebratory meals catered; this is good food and game country. You’ve a bar area with microwave and fridge; can have fresh breakfast croissants delivered and prepare snacks and picnics; eat out in Bampton, maybe at the Swan, or Woods in Dulverton, or the Masons Arms, Knowstone.

Come for Bampton’s October Fair and Folk Festival, to walk and to cycle. Exmoor has routes for all – from Dunkery Beacon to sheltered Watersmeet. Ask about horse-riding, hunting and fishing; you could be surfing or sunning yourself on Saunton sands in under an hour.

I like the idea of settling in for a few days at the Ginger Peanut with a group of walking friends, exploring Exmoor and asking Clare to organise an inventive caterer for a feast of good, locally sourced food and drink, for the last night...

Local points of interest from Chris & Damian

  • The sweet and historic town of Bampton is nestled in the heart of Devon between Exmoor and Dartmoor - great for rambling walks, horse riding and incredible views. And we are just minutes away from Huntsham Court Country House.
  • Easily accessibly by train and road, Bampton with its pubs and artisan shops is the perfect overnight stop at the gateway to Devon to Cornwall.
  • The Ginger Peanut won Devon Life's Best Newcomer of the Year 2018. We were named in "Top 20 new hotels and hostels 2018" by the Guardian newspaper, and rated 9/10 by the Telegraph.
  • Our chef Peter Mundy is a rising star having won many prestigious awards with a regularly changing, seasonal menu. Every dish is locally and ethically source, and lovingly prepared.
  • Our bedrooms have incredibly comfy beds - at least king size if not bigger - TVs and free WiFi. And great power showers! The bar has an incredible selection of gins, whiskeys and spirits.
  • In the heart of Devon, we're a great location for exploring both the north and south coasts.

Chris & Damian

Chris Badham and Damian Llambias also own nearby Huntsham Court and their design skills have created an easy-going, stylish atmosphere within the listed 19th-century Ginger Peanut. Local manager Clare Agertoft is happy to arrange catering and picnic lunches for groups and to answer questions about pretty much anything local, from shopping to shooting.
