The
Experience

Foodies will be spoilt for choice: local asparagus with duck egg and truffle mayonnaise then maybe, scallops and belly pork duo? Peter Mundy goes for taste, innovation and beauty in dishes that get rave reviews and the revamped pub setting has a woody, easy-going feel with the promising sparkle of well-polished glasses. It’s just an after-dinner flight of stairs to sleek rooms; cleverly designed for the building’s cottagey bones; each has an easy chair and Quail, the smallest, the biggest shower room. Have a lazy breakfast in bed, in the restaurant or in the café/bakery around the corner.Take a stroll around the town and Church of St Michael and All Angels; there are pleasant local walks; more dramatic routes up on Exmoor (and space for clobber at the back door); ask about fishing, riding, picnic lunches – the team here are very helpful.

Location

The neighbourhood

Friendly Bampton, in gentle countryside south of Exmoor and 25 minutes from Tiverton, has many listed buildings, like the 19th-century Ginger Peanut. The church is one of few that pre-date the Civil War burnings of 1645. It’s 30-minutes’ drive to walk to Exmoor’s highest point, Dunkery Beacon; an hour to coastal Lynmouth. Come for the October Fair and Folk Festival, to cycle and to ride; go antiquing in Wiveliscombe (20) and Honiton (45 minutes)

Local points of interest from Chris & Damian

  • The cute and historic town of Bampton is nestled in the heart of Devon between Exmoor and Dartmoor - great for rambling walks, horse riding and incredible views. Plus we are just minutes away from Huntsham Court Country House.
  • Easily accessibly by train and road the Bampton, with it's pubs and artisan shops is the perfect overnight stop at the gateway to Devon to Cornwall.
  • The Ginger Peanut has been publicaly acclaimed: named in "Top 20 new hotels and hostels 2018" by the Guardian newspaper. 9/10 by the Telegraph newspaper.
  • We are very proud to have an acclaimed on-site restaurant & bar, open Wed-Sun. The chef Peter Mundy is a rising star having won many prestigious awards with a regularly changing, seasonal menu. Every dish is locally & ethically source & lovingly prepared.
  • Our bedrooms have incredibly comfy beds - at least king size if not bigger - free wifi and TVs. Plus great power showers! Plus the bar has an incredible selection of gins, whiskeys and spirits to wet the palette.
  • In the heart of Devon we are a great location for exploring both the north and south Devon coasts, being bang in the middle.

Introducing

Chris & Damian

Chris, Damian and their team create an easy atmosphere for guests while chef Peter Mundy’s aim is to make Ginger Peanut the best restaurant in Devon supporting local suppliers of the freshest food (game from Exmoor, fish from Brixham, organically reared meat). His style: English and French, with a modern twist.
