The Experience

Chickens, children and dogs can roam free here. Mary and Justin will leave out cream teas or cake and some breakfast goodies to get you started – local organic milk and eggs if the hens feel like laying.

Watch roe deer wander in the fields, laze in the hammock, snuggle by the wood-burner, sip coffee on the terrace, soak up the views over the Northern Tors of Dartmoor. Kids can play ping-pong, build a campfire and marvel at the stars.

The Clovelly Inn for a pie and a pint is a half-hour stroll through the valley and across a stream. Drive to join the Two Castles Trail or West Devon Way at Okehampton – bring back local Curworthy cheese from the market and treats from the deli to cook in the open-plan kitchen, or head to the beaches of North Cornwall for fish, chips and surf.

Warm, easy-living house in a rambling garden with stunning Dartmoor views. Lovely, friendly hosts who leave you a yummy cream tea.

Wendy, Sawday's inspector

The setting of this cottage is ideal. While it seems far from everything, in reality it is only minutes from Dartmoor, the Lydford gorge, Brent Tor, and Tavistock. Only a bit further afield are Exmoor, Bodmin moor, Devon and Cornwall coastal walks and innumerable gardens. The cottage is meticulously kept and quite comfortable and provides something that is important to us and often lacking in other accommodations--excellent lighting for evening reading. Hosts Mary and Justin (and their two cats) were friendly and helpful, yet discreet. Their chickens were friendly as well and almost as discree

Just fabulous. A charming, stylish house nestling in glorious surroundings. There was nothing we didn't like! A warm welcome from the hosts and a real struggle to tear ourselves away - without hesitation, we will be back!

A lovely cottage in a very beautiful but not too touristy part of Devon. Great living space, comfortable beds, good kitchen with two fridges! Tumble dryer shares a space with the darts board, table tennis and the hens! The views of Dartmoor were stunning but rather hidden by the lush growth of the trees. Very friendly hosts and the best cream tea ever, and we tried quite a few!

The neighbourhood

You’ll feel quite remote here, surrounded by open countryside in a quiet hamlet - ask Mary and Justin about the local ancient woodlands, bluebell valleys and wild swimming. Walk, ride and climb on Dartmoor - six miles away. Drive 15 minutes to Okehampton; find a castle, museum, and bigger trails. Tavistock is 25 minutes away for great food, arts, crafts and antiques.

Local points of interest from Justin & Mary Ellery

  • Stretch your legs with a 40 min walk from the cottage through a stream and a farmyard to a local pub serving great pub food and real ale.
  • Nearby Widgery Cross is a great introduction to Dartmoor. Take the footbridge or hop the stepping stones over the river and picnic right there, take a wild swim or yomp up the Tor for breathtaking views to N and S coasts. Lunch at the fabulous Dartmoor Inn
  • Surf at Widemouth and bring home fresh fish to BBQ from the local fishmongers. At high tide walk along the cliff path in Bude then back along miles of wide sandy beaches at low tide. Lunch at Sandymouth cafe or Life's A Beach overlooking the breakwater.
  • There are many National Trust and English Heritage sites near us. Lydford Gorge has a beautiful circular walk which takes in the magnificent White Lady waterfall and dares you to peer in to the Devil's Cauldron!
  • Take an exhilarating ride on horseback up onto the moor from one of our many local riding schools or golf lovers can take advantage of the popular local courses.
  • Stroll around Tavistock's pannier market and pick up delicious local produce from its select delis and stalls (don't miss the fab cheese shop), then a browse round the antiques and bookshops.

Justin & Mary Ellery

Friendly and relaxed Mary (who works in film and TV) and Justin live next door with their two children, Betty the dog and Missie and Beastie the cats. They moved from London to their own Devonian rural idyll and bought the houses at auction.
