The
Experience
Paths and bridleways spider out through lush West Devon countryside: find rural peace, birds and wildlife near Dartmoor and the Cornish coast. The old linhay (a type of West Country farm building) sits in the semi-wild garden of the family’s listed farmhouse. Pause on the terrace for morning sun and views to Dartmoor over woodland, ponds and open fields where roe deer wander; peace reigns. Step through glazed doors into a light, open-plan, L-shaped living space of oak floors, antiques, window seats, good art and smart wood-burner (plus geothermal heating and solar power). You get a vaulted kitchen swathed in flagstones and polished slate, and a large double room with a pretty iron bed and garden views. Kids can play ping-pong, laze in the hammock, make a camp fire… and, when night falls, scramble up to the attic room where velux windows look out to the stars. Justin and Mary escaped here from the city and welcome you warmly with organic milk, home-laid eggs and logs on the house. Ask about walks, golf, surfing, biking, pony-trekking, restaurants… there’s plenty of them all.

A lovely cottage in a very beautiful but not too touristy part of Devon. Great living space, comfortable beds, good kitchen with two fridges! Tumble dryer shares a space with the darts board, table tennis and the hens! The views of Dartmoor were stunning but rather hidden by the lush growth of the trees. Very friendly hosts and the best cream tea ever, and we tried quite a few!

Location
The neighbourhood
Local points of interest from Justin & Mary Ellery
- Stretch your legs with a 40 min walk from the cottage through a stream and a farmyard to a local pub serving great pub food and real ale.
- Nearby Widgery Cross is a great introduction to Dartmoor. Take the footbridge or hop the stepping stones over the river and picnic right there, take a wild swim or yomp up the Tor for breathtaking views to N and S coasts. Lunch at the fabulous Dartmoor Inn
- Go surfing at Widemouth and bring home fresh fish from the local fishmongers to have at the cottage later by the fire or on the BBQ.
- At high tide walk along the cliff path from Bude then back along miles of wide sandy beaches at low tide, taking in the huge round rocks of Duck Pool, the NT cafe at Sandymouth and back to dinner overlooking the sea at Life's a Beach in Bude.
- Take an exhilarating ride on horseback up onto the moor from one of our many local riding schools or golf lovers can take advantage of the popular local courses.
- Stroll around Tavistock's pannier market and pick up delicious local produce from its select delis and stalls (don't miss the fab cheese shop), then a browse round the antiques and bookshops.

The setting of this cottage is ideal. While it seems far from everything, in reality it is only minutes from Dartmoor, the Lydford gorge, Brent Tor, and Tavistock. Only a bit further afield are Exmoor, Bodmin moor, Devon and Cornwall coastal walks and innumerable gardens. The cottage is meticulously kept and quite comfortable and provides something that is important to us and often lacking in other accommodations--excellent lighting for evening reading. Hosts Mary and Justin (and their two cats) were friendly and helpful, yet discreet. Their chickens were friendly as well and almost as discree
