The Experience

You’ll find plenty of space to spread out downstairs in a roomy open-plan living/dining space with a big old oak table for convivial meals, lots of books and games and a wood-burner (logs provided) to snuggle up by on chilly days. Kitchen cupboards have the basics but you’ll also enjoy a bottle of something from Sharpham vineyard just down the road and freshly cut flowers.

Walks from here are excellent – you’re on a promontory with soaring views and stunning sunsets – so head off towards the estuary, Tuckenhay or even Totnes if you’re feeling hearty. Beautiful Bantham beach is a short drive for fabulous winter walks or summer picnics and a walk across the causeway to the Pilchard Inn when the tide is out.

Hire bikes and cycle along a purpose-built path to Totnes (half an hour) for independent shops and cafes; return to a barbecue in your own garden, an al fresco supper and a big lawn great for yoga.

We had a wonderful stay at Hillside Ashprington. The cottage is beautifully laid out and very comfortable. Everything is top quality - from the complimentary soaps and shower gels to (what feels like) Egyptian cotton bed linen to (sharp!) kitchen knives. We had a lovely time dog-walking in the surrounding countryside (at Sharphams vineyard and to Tuckenhay and Totnes), cycling to Dittisham (eating pizza on the quay and taking our bikes on the tiny ferry to Greenway) and visiting the nearby beaches (Bantham was our favourite - with a little surf shack and retro food trucks). The perfect break!

We’ve just returned from a lovely week’s stay at Hillside. The cottage is in a great location, is super comfortable and has been beautifully restored. Lots of thoughtful touches such as the Sharpham wine and cheese, books, high quality bed linen plus a gorgeous bathroom with a freestanding bath. In the run up to our stay, Serena provided information promptly and efficiently, which was appreciated. We ate at the pub next door three times - great food and friendly staff. Lots to see and do in this part of Devon. Highly recommended.

Hillside is a very comfortable cottage in a beautiful village surrounded by wonderful countryside. We took plenty of good walks from the cottage and enjoyed several visits to the welcoming pub next door, enjoying delicious food. Local fruit picking and cheese and wine tasting were also highlights of our stay. Further afield South Hams offers so many beautiful places to explore and we found it easy to escape holiday crowds. Altogether we thoroughly enjoyed our holiday and would recommend it to others.

Hillside is a gorgeous, spacious cottage that we were able to thoroughly enjoy with our two children and dog. The restoration and interior decor have been beautifully done and it was a joy for us to stay there for a week. The cottage is spotlessly clean, well organised and Serena was always very helpful and friendly. Ashprington is a delightful English rural village and the surrounding area with the River Dart is beautiful. We enjoyed the South Devon beaches and Dartmoor but quite refreshing to return to the peace and quiet of Hillside!

Susannah, Bath

We were lucky enough to be the first guests in this beautiful cottage - a truly wonderful stay! We were especially impressed by the thoughtful renovation of the cottage which highlighted the original architecture but added all the modern amenities (the proper bath and usb ports were very welcome). Ashprington is a great, quiet base for exploring South Devon and you'll be very happy to have the local pub just down the road when you return home. A lovely getaway!

The neighbourhood

Ashprington is a very pretty village with a 15th-century church, St David's, full of ancient carvings and with a Norman font. Walk to the Sharpham wine estate to join a tour, have a wine tasting or eat in their lovely outdoor cafe. Stock up at Ben's Farm Shop (part of the Riverford family) near Totnes; they'll also deliver if you like. Dartmouth for The Seahorse Restaurant is a half-hour drive.

Serena Searight

Serena is a designer and responsible (along with local craftsmen) for the tender restoration of this beautiful cottage. Her love of hand-dyed and block-printed linens is also evident. You’ll find her oil paintings hanging next to her son Tris’s pen drawings and a cottage garden outside designed by her daughter Kate. They hope you enjoy the cottage as much as they do.
