The Experience

Food is important here – the kitchen garden is abundant with veggies and soft fruits; there are chickens and beehives and spring water from the well in your bedroom. Anything that can’t be grown, foraged or made is bought as locally as possible. Delicious meals are a relaxed affair around the big table; breakfast can be granola, bread, muffins, banana and cinnamon porridge or a full English. Book in for a two or three-course dinner paired with local wine.

You’re on the fringes of Dartmoor, footpaths shoot off from the door – take a packed lunch and follow the meandering river Lew. The family have tons of local knowledge and Guy offers guided walks through the National Park, or a night-time stargaze.

The bedrooms, two large and one huge, are part of the old milking parlour: comfortable, airy spaces to read or watch TV if it rains, with Judy’s artwork brightening the walls. Sit in the garden watching birds dart around, gather round the fire pit in the evenings.

I haven't stayed in a Sawday's for a long time and am delighted to find the same high standards and good value prevail. We were made so welcome by the whole family, the room was delightful and very comfortable and the meals absolutely delicious. We enjoyed sharing the dining table with the other guests and appreciated all the home or locally sourced produce, particularly Guy's wonderful bread... The attention to detail is second to none - we won't forget those homemade peanut butter cookies and cup of tea waiting for us after an 8 mile walk on Dartmoor!

Diana, Wells

I felt so welcomed here. Dartmoor's expanse is on the doorstep and Guy will take you there at night to gaze at the vast, starry sky. Food is fabulous - home prepared, local, freshly foraged. Chatting around the breakfast table with other guests makes for an easy-going start to the day, a drink by the fire pit after a trek on Dartmoor makes for a relaxed end too. You may well want to return...

The neighbourhood

The National Park is five miles away. Pretty village of Lydford is a 15-minute drive; visit the National Trust Lydford Gorge - a spectacular 30-metre waterfall - and there's a good pub here too, The Dartmoor Inn. Tavistock is a bit further and a bit bigger with more shops, an indoor market, restaurants and cafés. 20 minutes away is Launceston, the ancient capital of Cornwall, with its Norman castle ruins. Bude and the North Cornwall coast are under an hour.

Local points of interest from Guy Barnes

  • The wild places of Dartmoor call when staying at Lee Byre. Let us help you plan a memorable excursion, or allow us to inspire with a guided walk (incl. a homemade packed lunch) through this ancient landscape. Or experience a star trek under the night's sky
  • Experience an evening meal at Lee Byre, enjoy a bottle of local wine and get cosy next to the fire pit. Or head out to one of our highly acclaimed local pubs. From old farmhouses to a Michelin star pub, there is something for everyone.
  • Experience our passion for our humble kitchen garden, our hens, our bees. As well as what we can forage from the woodland that borders our home; all of which goes into the food we serve. Come taste the difference!
  • Explore Tavistock Pannier Market- 15 mins by car. The birthplace of Sir Francis and the cream tea! This bustling market town is bucking the trend in English town centres and is well worth exploring.
  • Explore from your bedroom door. After listening to the dawn chorus and having enjoyed a hearty breakfast - step out into our field and become aware of the abundant birdlife, farm life and flora around us. Walk straight into the woods and feel at peace.
  • Visit the ancient capital of region at Lydford - 10 mins by car. See the beautiful Norman church and castle next door; take the wild and rugged track round Lydford Gorge; step back in time and wander the Lydford Castle Inn, with a local brew.

Guy Barnes

Lee Byre is a much-loved family home; John and Judy restored the derelict house and farm buildings over 30 years ago. When Guy and his wife Kathrin escaped the bright lights and decided to move back to Guy's childhood home, running a B&B seemed the obvious choice for this foodie, sociable family. You're welcomed by the whole family including Guy and Kathrin's daughter, Maya, and the family Spanador - Jessie.
