The Experience

Fingals is magical, a jumble of a place in a hidden valley in one of the loveliest parts of south Devon. It’s run with charm, humour and a dash of idiosyncrasy by Richard and Sheila. They’ve made many changes to their lovely old Manor over the years and now you have six different self-catering apartments to choose from. The Lower Mill Cottage apartment is at the back of the Manor farmhouse; it has two bedrooms, open-plan kitchen, a large sitting room with a wood-burner and its own courtyard where you can barbecue and chat into the evening. The Upper Mill apartment sleeps six and has plenty of space to spread out; the dining area has a minstrel’s gallery above with heaps of books; the large suntrap courtyard garden is perfect for al fresco dining; there’s a conservatory and a stove-warmed sitting room with all the techy stuff you need; comfortable bedrooms are full of art and antiques. You also get the use of swimming pool, tennis court, gardens and a games room with snooker. Explore pretty Dittisham and the river Dart, visit Agatha Christie’s summer house and gardens, picnic on fab beaches, ramble through Dartmoor National Park.

Families will love these places- or for big reunions take both places which can then be linked via and outdoors staircase. Children will have a great time exploring the Fingals estate- table tennis, table football and a swimming pool (amongst other things) are all to be discovered. You are in the perfect spot close to the River Dart, beaches and great places to eat. Abandon the car and head out for walks from the doorstep, or head over to Dartmouth on the car ferry.

We chose The Upper Mill for a small family reunion and it couldn't have been more perfect. Super comfy, great facilities (couldn't keep the kids out of the pool) and exceptionally friendly hosts. Blessed with warm weather we ate on the terrace every day and didn't need to venture far, although the village of Dittisham is quite delightful and has the best lunchtime cafe (The Anchorstone right on the river's edge) in the world!

Rosie, Exeter

I can't recommend The Upper Mill highly enough. We grabbed just four days in the summer but wish it could have been so much longer. Plenty of space for everyone, the comfiest of beds, quite superb grass tennis court - we simply have to go back!

Local points of interest from Richard & Sheila Johnston

  • You are spoilt for outdoor activities here. Walk Green Lanes from our door, learn to sail on the River Dart just a mile away, take the whole family canoeing from the creek or crabbing on the village pontoon for hours of fun.
  • If you fancy a little sleuthing, jump on the ferry across to Agatha Christie's holiday home at Greenway on the banks of the River Dart. There are mystery trails in the grounds and the house as well as stunning views and excellent cream teas in the cafe.
  • Our favourite beaches require a bit of an effort to reach - private coves with rock pools and absolutely no modern facilities! We'll let you in on their secret locations when you arrive!
  • We have two steam trains locally for both big and little kids to enjoy. Kingswear to Paignton with great views of the Bay or Totnes to Buckfastleigh with Rare Breeds, Otters and Butterflies to see at attractions near the stations.
  • Wonderful cafes, bistros, pubs and restaurants will offer you sumptuous meals in every village or town or even on the beach. Local fish, meat and even veggies are colourful and so yummy - you will be rolling home at the end of your holiday!
  • The weekend market in Totnes is just wild. Full of crazy stalls with hints of your past - aromas of patchouli oil, folk wearing patchwork and with dreadlocks and beads in their hair will serve you organic and home made products to remind you of your stay.

Richard & Sheila Johnston

Richard and Sheila, convivial and charismatic, created Fingals in the 1980s. Not only was it a legendary restaurant-hotel, uniquely relaxed and informal, it was far greener than most. The hotel has now closed, but Richard and Sheila still live in the old manor. Sheila keeps doves, and, helped by Jane, runs the cottages with a delightful laid-back charm.
