Among rolling Devon hills at the heart of the pretty and popular South Pool is your open-plan cottage. Dating back to the 18th century, its light-filled modern interior is peppered with nods to the past and bright fabrics add a splash of colour against whitewashed walls. The inviting master bedroom has a well-dressed bed and painted furniture, and children will like the tall white bunk beds in the second bedroom. On your first morning rustle up a delicious breakfast (supplies are left for you in the fridge) in your sleek, open-plan kitchen/dining space and admire the beautiful view of the surrounding countryside. You could stay and lounge on deep comfy sofas by the wood-burner, but there’s so much to do in the area – ask lovely housekeeper Becky for tips. Explore the South Hams coastline, hire a kayak, potter around the independent shops in Kingsbridge then come back to soak up the sun on your terrace that overhangs the brook (mind toddlers). If you don’t feel like cooking, pop next door to the award-winning, foodie Millbrook Inn – popular in the summer, the hubbub of its garden reaches yours, but they don’t open late.
